misfire cyl#2

Hey there! i posted awhile back about a cyl #1 misfire and evap problems and got some really great advice. these problems have been mostly resolved.except my misfire has moved to #2 cyl. and now am stalling at low idle when i back off the gas quickly. when i turn the engine over it sounds like low compression in at least one cyl. I will do a compression test tomorrow. I should say that #1 misfire went away on its own. When I swapped coils it made no difference. Is it possible my timing chain is stretched or the tensioner worn out. It was also suggested that valves may be too tight? I know i need to shim them.as I have 250,000 km. and its never been done. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,Rick

spark plug, coils if you have the ignition coil style which i believe all matrix do. check for signs of wear on the plugs ex oil on it means possible leak from valve which could also cause a leak in combstions making is sound like poor compression.

Canada Thanks Trix-e

I've been through the plug and coil thing awhile back, but on a cyl. misfire on cyl#1 which surprisingly dissapeared on its own only to show up in cyl #2 now. I am going to check compression today, but really seems strange for misfire to change cylinders.

Misfires can't jump from cylinder to cylinder in that manner - unless the original problem was a bad or intermittent coil that happened to be on the offending cylinder.

I would look into an electrical issue with the ECM, especially any electrical interference, poor chassis ground points, EMI from newly added electronics, etc. The 1ZZ-FE engine is pretty sensitive to electrical noise.

I wouldn't rule out a fuel or spark plug issue either. Pull the plugs out and read them - noting any changes. Drive normally, see if you get #2 to misfire and immediately shutdown the engine. Remove the plugs and re-read them to see what is going on (allow to cool first, of course).

250,000KM (~155K miles) is pretty decent number of miles, but I wouldn't consider that too many miles for this sort of engine. They recommend an audible check of the valves - normal adjustment is not needed in most cases. I've checked clearances on both my cars for grins - they have been spot on - have 165K miles on the Corolla and 115K miles on the Matrix.

compression test

Well finally got compression test done! Cyl#1-135,#2-60,#3-175,#4-120. These pressures are all over the place! Any ideas why? All plugs look the same, nice and clean!

Pull #2 plug.
Turn the crankshaft to compression stroke of #2.
Apply compressed air to #2 plug hole.
If you hear hissing from the oil fill hole its the rings.
Hissing from the tailpipe = exhaust valve.
Hissing from the air intake = intake valve.
Bubbling coolant = head gasket.
