2006 Matrix Throtle controls

Does the 2006 Matrix or 2006 Vibe have a control cable running from the gas peddle to the throttle ? Or is it some kind of reostat electronic control ? If a change from a cable operated throttle control was made in what years or generation (Matrix or Vibe) was that done. Also , is there a location or design change for the Coolant Temp. sensor ? If so, what model years or generation did it involve ? Thanks Dan.

DBW were introduced in the 2005+ model years. The 2003-2004 Matrix and Vibe used the conventional cable operated throttle bodies.

If you were thinking of swapping a cable for your DBW - keep in mind this is a non-trival swap. Not just the mechanical aspects, but the electrical and ECM control.

As for the ECT switch - not sure if they moved them at all on the DBW systems. Location of the sensor was on the thermostat housing on the previous (non-DBW) generations.

Thanks . I was thinking about buying a 2006 Vibe but now I think I'll pass. My consern is the problem of sudden acceleration. It seems to me there is a coralation with the cable controled trottles and the electronicly controled throttles. I can't afford to be wrong. Please let me know your thoughts on this matter. Thanks Dan.

Hard to say for sure. Don't let the press and media get you spun up. It has never been exhaustively shown that DBW and SUA (sudden unintended acceleration) are linked at the electronic level. Maybe just an extraordinary coincidence that certain EMF exposure and SUA events happened to coincide together. Its not just Toyota - Ford, Audi, and other makes have also seen an inordinate amount of SUA as of late - just that Toyota's name grabs more headlines.

Don't get me wrong - this generation of Matrix/Vibe had their share of headaches with DBW - non of which were SUA events, but more along the lines of throttle response lag - you step on the accelerator and there is a finite delay time before the PCM reacts. Those were fixed with an ECM flash and TPS recalibration. I've yet to hear anyone of the later 9th gen Corolla / later 1st gen Matrix/Vibe that experienced any SUA events.

If the 2006 Vibe is a good deal - I'd still consider it for decent transportation - SUA on this particular model years is a non-issue. But it is your call in the end.

The Vibe I interested in has 60K on it. I like the ease of entry because of my disability. Saidly I would have to sell our 96 Corolla and it only has 48k on it . I have changed all the belts and did all the rest of the matenance. I replaced the tires because they were dri-rotted. It has been the best car I have ever had -period ! Thanks for you help. Dan.
