Need Advice From matrix owners...

Hi guys, my uncles matrix died on him. He told me it was fine going to work then on the way back home it died at the lights, he started it again n it didnt go over 10 clicks before dying again, then he pushed it into a nearby school were he told me he called a mechanic n he said to restart the computer(???) so he did that and it started up. He parked it at a friends house to be on the safe side. Then they started it there again n it died and wouldnt start since. For some reason hes telling me he wants to change the fuel pump and filter:S inno why he would think its that. Im guessing bad 02 sensor? let me know what you guys think I should do to trouble shoot this.

Diagnose the issue before you go swapping parts. Like mikered30 stated, any CEL (Check Engine Lamp) indicated (you'll need a scanner to read the codes)?

Need a bit more information:

Car cranks and cranks when you turn the key to run but doesn't catch at all?
Verify that you get spark?
Verify that you get fuel?
Anything visually out of the norm - burnt wiring, cut, missing or damaged wiring/hoses, etc.?

Resetting the ECM to get it to restart makes it sound like the ECM is potentially a source of the problems - anything was changed/added/modified with the car before this happened (could be as simple as a new headunit or running extra electrical components)?
