03 XRS Matrix California New Catalytic Converter, Options?

So the shop with the most honest reviews on yelp, plus the mechanic I always go to for work across the street, say I need a new catalytic converter. Lucky me I live in California.

Has anyone had success finding a replacement part for this in my state from another car, a reputable source (I am willing to drive, I live in Monterey), or any other option to pass smog? I have about 2 weeks.

This is my first post, I searched, but have no idea how to find out if another cars part will fit my own.

I found this page of universal catalytic converters that said the ones in red are california legal, and a hell of a lot cheaper. Any ideas what size we may need for our cars? I was thinking a universal would be much cheaper.

unfortunately - due to california law that passed about 2 years ago - online aftermarket retailers cannot sell any cat. converters to ANY CA address.

Check again and see if that online retailer will sell you the cat. I doubt they will.

Other than paying the $1100 - $1500 for the dealer to replace the cat. and mid pipe - you can perhaps have a relative buy or have it shipped to their out of state (NON - CA) address and pick it up that way. It'll be cheaper - but keep in mind aftermarket cats have less of the precious metals that an OEM cat would have.

Aftermarket cat life = 2 - 4 years.

OEM cat. - should be about 5 - 8 years.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
