I have a 2005 Matrix XRS (2ZZ engine) which had this problem a few years ago and it cost me > $500. I read the press release which says only the 1ZZ engine is recalled.

Do I have a case to try and get my $$$ back?

What was the code? Only 6000 9th gen XRSs were made, I dont think they will recall them.

Here are the codes that came up. They changed the airbag control sensor at the time....I thought this might be related to the recall but am not sure especially since it cost about $500 to fix and Toyota's website has a condition to cover people who already paid. May not hurt to call their 1-800 number

B1650 - Occupant classification system malfunction
B1801 - open in D squib circuit
B1803 - short in D squib circuit (T0+B)
B1806 - Open in P squib circuit
B1811 - Open in D squib (dual stage - 2nd step) circuit
B1816 - Open in P squib (dual stage - 2nd step) circuit
B1901 - Open in P/T squib (D seat side circuit)
B1906 - Open in P/T squib (P seat side circuit)

No, those are all air bag codes. Some XRSs did have bad ECUs, but not covered in the recall.

Some people are on their 3rd ECU, will they get refunded for all ECUs bought out of pocket?

Replacing the ECU has nothing to do with you having an intake, so yes they should replace it just fine.

I've got a 2008 Matrix I brought to South Korea with me and the thing stalled in the middle of the road when my wife drove it one evening. Found out it was the ECM and under the recall. This happened on 24 September 2010. Naturally, I contacted Toyota and after 3 weeks of arguing with them, they finally conceded that the car was under the ECM recall. However, since I'm in Korea (we're not ex-pats, btw), they told me they had to contact Japan for information. They told me it could be up to and including THREE (yes 3) months before they could determine what to do! As of 30 December 2010 and my wife expecting our first child, Toyota is still telling me that same story-- They have to wait on Japan to give them an answer. And no, there's no dealership or Toyota mechanics here.

I'm getting slightly fed up with paying for a car I can't use because of a factory defect. Any idea(s) how in the world I can get my car running again? I bought the car new in 2008 and until this, it never had a single problem and ran perfect.
