2004 AWD matrix to 1zz to 2zz

I have a 2004 Toyota Matrix AWD with the stock 1zz and AWD.

I live in northern Canada where we get lots of snow, and would love to put a 2zz w/6spd in place of the 1zz.

Is this an easy/do-able swap? I'm not looking for performance gain (aka, dump clutch at 8000rpm) but rather for traction in winter.

I figure if they can swap a 2zz into a mr-s, then a this swap should be do-able...? Has it been done before or would I be the first?

Thanks,

Not a good idea. You are much better off selling it and buying an AWD car altogether. Or maybe see if you can find the 1ZZ TRD supercharger for it.

It will cost way too much and the end results will be very disappointing considering the cost.

The Matrix AWD weighs too much (3000 lbs) and with 2ZZ and 6 speed, the weight will work against it considering it is a car with most of its power up in the very high rpms. The car will feel extremely sluggish in daily driving. The AWD will also sap power further reducing performance.

How would an engine swap aid traction in the winter?

i heard that 1zz has better midrange torque than 2zz. so for daily driving you might be better in the 1zz
