2006 Matrix smart key work around?

I tried searching but to no avail. So my question is: Is there a work around like GM to reprogram a new ignition key as is possible by certain movements of car' key in the lock cylinder? I want a another "inexpensive" spare.

thanks

are you speaking of the alarm remote? or key itself. The keys are normal, no chip. and most guys that do electronics diagnostic do reprogramming on the remotes

I thought matrix keys have a chip in them as a theft deterrent

Depends on the model year Matrix - my old 2003 Matrix XRS just used a plain key.

But I believe starting with the 2005 model year, if your car was equipped with the "Engine Immobilizer Option" - you have chipped keys. Depending on the market and trim, not all Matrix had the Engine Immobilizer option installed. No way around that unless you get an alarm that has the RFID tag copied from your existing key or take your spare key and tape it close to the steering column.

Well, depends on the year. My 2005 Corolla XRS has a chipped key and a transponder in the steering column. The electronic immobilizer depends on the key getting read by the ECU otherwise, it disables all electronics in the car.
