Is it a sulfur smell? Try changing gas brands. Try top tier gas for the time being. Any soot on the tail pipe?

TSB is not for your year, but toyota does know about it.

I agree its more fuel related than sparks or coils. maybe running a bit rich also.

Yeah gas more so than anything. The Toyota rotten egg smell is what I call it but it will keep tailgaters away if you goose it when they creep up. Lol

Rotten egg smell from the exhaust?

Probably the cat. converter is close to being toast. You might want to look into replacing that soon.

my wifes matrix is having the same tell tail signs. we purchase chevron and texaco gas only so its not any crap gas issues. so i was thinking of buying an after market header which bypasses the stock cat. i have no emissions or regs where i am so i am not caring about that little issue. my only problem is we have an awd model and i was wondering if all the headers for the 1zz are the same?

The only aftermarket header for the AWD Matrix (the 1st generation) is an OBX header.
