What is the stock offset, +35mm? Will a +40-42mm offset fit on my Matrix on 18x7.5-8 rim? Most aftermarket 18in rims I'm interested in or can even find have a +40-42 offset. Please let me know.

A good place to check is http://www.discounttiredirect.com

When you enter your vehicle (not the interactive system), it will list all wheels that they carry for your car, along with the offset of those wheels.

Since I have +35 offset, 8" wide rims on my XR, same track width, I would be cautious, looks like it could be a be of a tight fitment for anything more up front, especially if you are going to lower it, in my opionion you should to that!
The rear has plenty of clearance for a higher offset figure. I have looking into most brands of lightweight 17's and some 18's for a set of "street wheels" to lower amount of mass I now have with 26 lb 19's. I highly recommend getting as light as wheel and tire combo as you can find and at least 7.5" wide minimum, 8" prefered. THere is a big performance penalty with heavyier wheels as neither motor in the Matrix has much bottem end.
There are not alot of choices in wheels that look good for the car, the best so far seem to be 5 spoke ones in my opionion.

Discount tire doesn't have anything listed for a 2003 yet and I don't really care for the brands. I can't find anything that I like that has a 35mm offset, even a five spoke wheel in a 18inch size that is relatively lightweight.

Not much available then the problem is alos the bolt pattern, 5x100 is not as prevelent as others. One that may work is the the Konig toxin, split 6 spokes, probable around 18 lbs, 18x7.5" but not sure of the offset. Not my favorite style though.

I don't really like the Koing Toxxins either, not my style, don't really like Koing wheels. I don't think they have the correct offset either. I might go with the OZ superleggeras 18x8 +35.
