running without thermostat

my father recently had a rebuilt engine installed by my mechanic. Everything works fine, except the thermostat. He is using a cheap one from auto zone. He said temps are always low. The check engine light comes on sometimes, so he took the thermostat out and know the check engine light has gone away. He just took a five hour trip to drop off my sister at school and know the oil hose popped off and the car stopped. Can the thermostat being removed have anything to do with the hose.

Not sure if driving without a thermostat would cause an oil hose to come loose, but I wouldn't recommend it. Without one, the engine will never get up to proper operating temperature and thus not work efficiently. Race engines are pretty different from your regular consumer engines as their cooling needs are different among other things.

FYI, really need to work punctuation, spelling and grammar, very difficult reading your posts.

What oil line? There are no external oil lines for the engine on the matrix. Was it an oil cooler line for the Auto trans? if so its possible that the tech left it loose.. Also put a thermostat back in that engine, get one from your local Toyota dealer/

Is it going to hurt anything or cause hoses to pop off? Unlikely. However, like the others said it will take forever or not warm up at all, and during that "cold" phase the engine will use a ton of gas and run like crap.
