Just an update:
Replaced the condensor (CAP) on the 12v supply of the coils.

Removed the "loop" from the #1 coil (butt spliced).

Have a "new" used ECU ready to be flashed by dealer ($120).

Based upon the history it seems only #1 and #3 coils have really crapped out (2 each). #2 and #4 were replaced out of concern that they may be going out (wished I would have kept them). If the "new" ECU doesn't stop them from crapping out I'll be pulling new wires from the ECU to the coils. Still have the TRD ECU and ECU adapter out!

I know this is an old post but would like to know how it came out. I have an 07 6 cylinder Camry which has had nothing done to it other then 3 ignition coils replaced. There must be something causing all of these failures. It would be nice if I could make some sort of troubleshooting suggestion to the dealer the next time one fails. Thanks for any replies.

I had the battery die last week so I put in a new battery . I just read a post that said the alternators have been redesigned do to a bad pulley system (the pulley has a clutch system in it). The post said the alternator may cause some electrical gremlins to occur. Could this possibly contribute to all the ignition coil failures? Any thoughts on this?

Kongmen,
Well I don't have any answers for you. I beleive it was an issue with the Condensor but time will only tell. I havn't had one fail in awhile (knock on wood). In regards to the alternator anything is possible if in fact it's causing some "crappy" power. Goodluck!

USA 4 Coils replaced

I have also had 4 coil failures. Our 02 Rav4 2 wheel drive automatic had the first failure at 148K on Cyl. #2. This was very hard to diagnose. Very intermittent stumbling at 1st to 2nd gear shift point, stalling randomly while backing out of parking space, and 3 times quitting and not restarting until C/OPN relay pulled and reset in place over 6 months and a lot of time at dealerships and me troubleshooting at home. Never a CEL and no codes.

Dealer could not diagnose and in fact changed the crank sensor at one Toyota dealership then finally said come back after it got worse. Then took to another and they changed ECU under TX recall. Finally took an independant transmission shop I have used before and he had 2 laptops monitoring everything and found the #2 coil bad. He replaced with aftermarket BWD coil.

This coil lasted 6 months or so then failed with a flashing CEL indication and setting corresponding codes. Daughter was away at college so this diagnosis and repair was done at Toyota with Toyota parts. #2 coil was replaced for the 2nd time.

About 2 weeks later the Rav began the intermittent stumbling and stalling again. I then chose to replace all remaing coils. I had the gotten the BWD replaced under warranty so put it in and bought 2 more BWD's from Advance Auto. The #1 original now 160K coil had a noticeable burnt odor and got replaced with the BWD. The 2 Advance coils went into #3 and #4. Rav ran great.

2 weeks later-Yesterday-my daughter called and said the CEL was flashing and car running poorly. I took the original 150K plus mile coils #3 and #4 with me the 90 miles to her and drove her Rav to Advance and checked codes. #3 and #4 misfiring. That Advance had no coils in stock. Installed the old coils back into the #3 and #4 positions and the car ran great again. Cleared codes.

Brought the Rav home and verified the #4 coil was bad but the #3 was good by reinstalling 1 at a time. Advance warrantied the bad coil and I have now installed the BWD's and removed the older original coils again.

Has anyone else had trouble with the aftermarket coils failing and if so what is better, new coils from Toyota or used from a junkyard? The original don't seem to set the CEL or codes. At least the aftermarkets do set a code. Why don't the originals set codes?

Also mentioned in the previous post was replacement of the capacitor (Noise Filter) in the 12 volt B+ line of the coils. Has anyone else had experience with this possibly being a cause of coil failure?

That condensor or noise filter seemed to help me with my issue. So far so good and they only cost $25.

Good luck!
