The XRS has 5 more lbs of torque then the XR. Also the XRS has a 6 speed manual compared to the XR's 5 speed. The XRS is on a different level of performance then the XR stock. As for modifications there is a TRD S/C for the 1zz motor which is in the XR, though it has been discontinued since. The 2zz in the XRS can make more power for cheaper though.

oopps, nevermind about the trd s/c, i know what that is now..lol
does trd s/c comes as a stock model?
The S/C does not come standard with any model. And if performance is what your looking for then the XRS is much better than the XR. The XR has a bit of a smoother ride due to a softer suspension. But the XRS I feel is a better vehicle all around.

With the exception of the all-wheel drive model, which had an IRS, all gen-1 Matrix had the same suspension...whether base, XR or XRS. There wasn't a "harder" or "softer" suspension. HP ratings for the XRS were 180, 173 and 164 depending on the year. The base/XR was 130 and the AWD was 125.
It's true that the 2zz put out more peak torque, but the 1zz made slightly more torque at lower rpms than the 2zz. Still though, overall the 2zz is a better performer.
The XRS will also give a 6 speed tranny and 4 wheel disc brakes vs. the base/XR.
Kinda miss my old XRS.

Does that mean the XRS waste more gas than the XR? like a civic lx(Stock) vs. a vtec?(Stock)
since the XRS is more efficient and powerful than the XR??

The 1zz engine in the base/XR will get better mileage than the XRS....hands down. Also, the 2zz requires premium fuel...91 octane or higher.

Matrix was not THAT heavy. I remember the specs at 2850 pounds. It was never over that number. The Corolla XRS weighed 2650 lbs.
Yeah, minimum of Octane 91 is absolutely must for 2ZZ unless you don't rev it over 4000 rpm since the 11.5:1 compression ratio applies to only the high-lift cam.
