Well ladies and gents,i was driving about a couple of miles doing about 50mph when i looked down and saw that the check engine light came on.I opened the hood looked around for any leaks or anything out of the ordinary.I also checked to make sure all hoses were secured.Still the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT was on.Then someone told me to check the fuel cap and check if tight.I checked and it wasnt,it was actually loose. So i tightened it,but still the same thing. The CHECK ENGINE LIGHT was still on.anyone have the same problem?Help me out here guys.
If your fuel cap was loose, that is most likely what set your code. It is part of the evaporative emissions module on all Toyota post 2000.
Since the code is stored in your car's ECU as PROM, you need to take your car to a Toyota dealer and have them reset the computer, this will shut off your engine light.
u don't have to bring it to them, just unplug your negative terminal on your batter for 20 mins or pull the ecu fuse and put it back it...that will reset it back to norm.
if you read the manual it says what happens if you cap is loose, CEL won't go away until after a couple of engine starts.
i heard they will charge you for not tightening your cap.
Can anyone know how to shut off the check engine light on at all time.
I try disconnect the bateries then it came back on, reset a fuse then back on again.
Please help if you have any way to shut a light off. Try to do this myself. Thanks.

Commendable to DIY. My experience says you have to address the cause of the CEL before a reset will make it go away. In other words there is a physical reason that your car is throwing a CEL, and you have to address that physical problem before the battery disconnect or ECU fuse pull will keep the light off.
For instance, if you blow a sensor, like the MAF, and you have a Scanguage and can reset the CEL the easy way... every time you reset the CEL, the light will come back on because the sensor is still blown and you still have a problem. Does that make sense or am I rambling?
Anyway, you have to find out what the diagnostic code is behind the CEL, and fix that before the light will stay off. Or else just put a piece of tape over the light to make it easier to ignore..... just kidding!
Hi,
I have vitz 2000 Auto, i drive my car suddenly i saw in meter engine check light is ON, i stoped my car and self off and restart again check engine light is off. second day once again i have drive approx 7 to 8kms once again engine check light is ON, once again self off check engine light is off, ANY BODY Help me whats the problem. pls........
If you are regarding the OEM/GM Brand radio then no - there is no radio reset code needed.
You just have to adjust the time, but the radio presets will still be there.
That is awesome! I did it last night and the light is off. What happened was I filled up and neglected to turn the cap until I heard clicking!!! Had I been a smart woman I would have put my glasses on to read the fine print on the cap!!!! Lesson learned!
Hello all ... my battery light was flickering once in a while and now it is on solid!!!! Can someone tell me if they have had this experience and what the problem is ... I hope it is not the need of a new altinator ... Also, what does an altinator cost??? I am in Toronto so if someone knows a Canadian price that would be sweet! Does anyone know if replacing the belt is a big job or not?? Thanks all!

i had the same experience due to excessive noise...basically what you need to do it trade in your old one for the new alternator and will cost you about $300..if you need a shop or parts store i can certainly help you out...unfortunately the last time i checked the dealership sells it for $600.....

Well I took it to the shop last night to get an AVR done and they found that a wire was missing some of its thermal insulation and a piece of wire had broken out causing a short. Now on the alternator there is a black plug on the front that wires run into, you can remove that plug, and when this one was off you could see the white wire where it joins onto the black plug was snipped up somehow ... I have no clue how it would get like that but I am not wondering if I could go to a yard and rip that plug with the wires out of a wreck there and splice it up onto mine??? Can I do that?? I am not too sure (being a female I know a bit but not everything) where the other end of the wires lead too or how they are attached at the other end??? Can you tell me? Thanks a bunch!
I have the same check engine light issue everytime I get gas for the past 6 or 7 months. as soon as I hit 2nd gear in my 2003 matrix the light comes on, I can reset it by turning the key on and off 30+ times. I have already purchased a new fuel cap to see if there is a leak in the seal. I know I should take it in, but I cant stand to see it on.
