So i just bought this 2003 XRS 2 weeks ago. I bought it because the previous owner was a Toyota Mechanic and he recently had the clutch replaced, flywheel resurfaced, front seal replaced, external tensioner replaced, new timing set, and head gasket. He did some of the work because he already had most of the engine apart. i thought GREAT! all this maintenance. Test drove the car, no check engine light and shifted great.
So I bought the car and whamo! check engine light came on, P1346. I took it to my friend who is a 10 year Toyota mechanic and he looked at it for a couple of hours. didn't find anything wrong with timing or chain or cams. He only had a couple hours to look at it and told me he would have to ask around the shop to see if anyone had any ideas of what was going on.
I started the car the next day and IT hit the fan. Car made a funny ticking and then stalled. Took the valve cover off and my friend told me to bump the engine with the starter and see if the cams turned. NOPE. So something was definitely off. He said most likely I bent some valves and advised me to pull the engine

Engine on the hoist after 4 days work. I am not a mechanic so i took my time and tons of pictures

Pulled the crank pulley and it was cracked

Crank snout is totally jacked where that half moon key goes. So I need a new crank along with rebuilt head.

Pieces of crank cam gear and misc other bits
So, moral of the story, it doesn't matter if they are a mechanic, they can screw up too. My friend said that he must have just smashed the crank pulley onto crank not checking to see if the key was in the proper position.
My engine is at Scroggins machine shop in Houston now. They haven't called me yet for the estimate for repair.
So for all you out there that for some reason need to pulled the crank pulley off, make sure you line things up or you could end up with this mess on your hands. i thought I would share.
