We just bought a 2006 Matrix XR with 75K from the dealer. I've never bought from a dealer before, and see why people DON'T. I felt manipulated each step of the way, and I'm also a bit naive. Anyway, we got the Extended Warranty for bumper to bumper 8 yr/125k and paid $1700 for it. At the time I felt relatively good about it, now I feel like an idiot. The car was built in November, 2005. So, the warranty covers 29 months, and then we're still paying payments for the warranty, but without a warranty. The car comes with the 7 yr/100k powertrain warranty.
Am I right in feeling like an idiot? Is there any reasonable possibility, since I have the powertrain warranty, that anything could go wrong to pay for this? Also, in reading around here it looks like I can actually cancel the warranty -- is that true??
Thanks for the help! Excited about the car, not so excited about being tied to this warranty.
If you just bought the car, look at the fine print on the extended warranty - lookup your state and local laws concerning consumer purchases - you do have a right to return the warranty, though how much time you have is variable depending on the circumstances.
Yeah, some dealers are better than others - most people that I know, got burned once, after that - they usually can read through all the BS that some dealerships pan onto you.
Well...I feel like one. I've never really been in the kind of a situation where someone is telling whatever it takes to get you buy something. It has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with them. But, I guess it works, it's just not my style.
There are a lot of dealerships (normally called stealerships) out there that pressure you into buying extra products. I myself do work for a Toyota dealership, and I always recommend asking ahead of time to see prices of products, services, and warranties, so you have a day or two ahead of time to decide. Plus, just remember there is ALWAYS room to dicker on price on a warranty. Make that lots of room.
Don't feel like an idiot....it happens to lots of people every day. Personally, I hate situations like that.

Thanks for the encouragement. I did do pretty well in that we traveled a few hours to go see this car, and when we got there it had a dent and scratch in the side and I said I wanted them to fix it before we bought it, and they did. So, that felt good (though the did a 2nd rate paint job...it still looks better than it did).

Deal is done and all, but out of curiosity why did you not consider the Pontiac Vibe, which is basically the same car, but sells for less used?
Maybe the OP doesn't care for the look of the Vibe?
Too bad if that is true. The Vibe is much cheaper used than the Matrix (more so now that Pontiac is gone), for the same drivetrain, just different body style.
