Matrix MPG ?

Thinking read hard on getting on of these, narrowed it down to a Matrix or Corolla, but really like the Matrix style, so does my 13 y.o. son.
The one I'm looking at now is a 2006 5 speed manual. It's about 80,000 miles, somewhere in that range.

I'm just wanting to know what kind of MPG can I expect to get.
28 -30 average will satisfy me because that's what my Saturn gets now, but hoping the highway MPG is in the upper 30's.
What would a 2007 Matrix with an auto get ,also?

Thanks,

Yeah, with 1ZZ your numbers seem to be in the right ballpark. About 32 - 33 mpg in the city and close to 40 mpg on the highway.

What does 1ZZ mean?

I may ask the dealer if I can take it out for several hours and drive to see what it gets. I know a lady that bought a car from the same place and she said they'll let you keep it for a couple days to see how you like since you can not take it back within 30 days like some places around here.

Fill it up and drive it like I normally drive around town for a couple hours and fill it up to see what it gets and then fill it up again and drive it on the highway for a couple hour to see how it does.

I think that would give me a good idea of what it'll get, maybe 120 miles in town and at least that, if not 200 on express way.

Anyone else that drives one of these,(automatic or manual) feel free to post what your mileage is.

I get between 28 and 30 mpg with my really heavy foot. On the FWD 1ZZ engine.

The 2 Matrix's I was looking do not have cruise control and I was told by the Toyota salesman that they could put cruise on it for under $300.
I called the service department yesterday about it and they told me that the part is not available so they can not put it on.

I call this other place that installs after market cruise controls and and the guy said he would have to check to make sure that it would work on that vehicle, but if it did it would cost $600. So I may have to look at getting a Matrix with it or look at a Corolla.

I stopped by the dealer today and they let me drive that 2006 Matrix 5 speed again. I filled it up with gas and drove for 150 miles, most on open road at 65 - 70 MPH.
I thought it would get better than it did, I calculated 33mpg.

I really did like it, but still needs cruise control and I'd have to rig up some pedal extenders with my short legs.

I'd like to find a 2006 or 2007 Corolla 5 speed and try it out, but manual shifts are hard to find. Plus, maybe these would get better mpg.

33 to 36 is about right. We have a 2009 and love it. Just wish it got the same mileage as the Corolla.

The mileage on the Matrix is about 5 MPG less than the Corolla because of the frontal area.

You can check out the EPA figures at:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/download.shtml

If you do some research, you can put cruise on it very easily. I read a thread here I think, where they got most of their parts from Rock Auto and it cost less than $50. The computer on the car already has the Cruise built in.

I found it. Here are just 2 links I found very quickly:
Added Cruise Control

Have fun.

Thanks for the links, some of the pics are gone so I couldn't see what the drive by wire looks like.
Also seen a post but done on a Corolla, but they are basically the same car. It had pictures and all, need to find it again.

The place I called wanted $400 to do it. I'll look heavily into doing my self but still may let them do it.

Also, I am 5' and got short legs. If I could lower the seat about an inch or two that would be great.
Or make some pedal extenders and raise the floor up a little. Not really the floor but maybe put something under the mat securely, any ideas?
