Need a bit more info: Anyway you could post a picture of what happened?

- What came apart - the axle popped out, hub seared off?
- Where did it come off, the side closest to the transaxle, side closest to the hub?
- Put everything back in the right order, torqued down the bolts properly - replacing hardware as needed?
- Did you install the snap rings before it was installed, or were the snap rings already on the replacement axle?
- Did you tug on the driveshaft after installing it to make sure it was seated on the transaxle, before you threaded it through the axle hub?
- Did you unbolt the lower control arm to give yourself more room, of just tried to do it with the lower suspension arm still on the car?

Popped out from the transaxle side - sounds like it didn't fully seat, even after you tapped it with the brass punch. If the snap ring wasn't positioned just right, then there is a chance that the axle will just fall out. Usually tugging on it after seating will check if it is seated correctly or not.

Also possible that you got the wrong part - happens more often than you think. Take it back, get a new axle, reinstall it. Before you set the car down - rotate the wheel by hand, see if everything is happy before you fire it up and start driving.
