Stock or cold air types?

Stock, you don't clean it. You replace it.

CAI types, entirely up to you. Judge it by your road and climate conditions. Dusty, gravel areas would require more cleaning.

Personally, I do mine twice/year.

K&N kits are good for any aftermarket filter but if you have a stock one then you should replace it when the time comes.

yeah, i have a short ram intake but i'm noticing that my check engine light is on. I haven't cleaned the filter in a few months and i thought that was the problem. It's been on since last wednesday and there's oil in it and it's not low either. Nothing seems wrong with it, it still drives fine, i guess it's down to the dealership this week because i can't figure out what the problem is.

Try resetting the ECU and check all the vacuum hoses attached to your intake.
Maybe your MAF sensor's all mucked up too. Try cleaning that as well before heading down to the dealer.

The engine light went away so i don't know what was wrong. I guess it just fixed itself.
