Just step on gas at frist gear until red line than change shift?

Yup.

Make sure you floor it.
If you're test driving the 05 XRS, lift doesn't engage until about 6500rpm.

Make sure the car's warmed up too.
Even if you stopped from a short trip and get back in the car 5 min later, the temp gauge is still hovering around 1/4 from the bottom, it won't hit lift.

when does the lift kick in with the 04? i never really payed that much attention. i only know when to shift at the red line!
