It took forever to get the one we needed for the project but now it finally gets to have some real HP. First the manifold will be built then the full on install will start shortly after. Full Dyno runs will be completed along with the stages of the system. Stock, turbo only, with intercooler and next some other tricks to get the boost as high as reasonably possible. I will post the results as I get them and according to my sponsores desires. There will be kits available shortly after mine is done for each stage as well.

WHOA that's sick! . .any info available on what u have? such as. .is what u are doing READILY AVAILABLE--can i buy it too? or is it in the test phase w/ ur sponsors?
I would like to know what this whole setup costs & was curious as to, if i was to buy this for a Matrix, could i have it installed under warranty- factory or dealer?. ..i have been wondering about this for a while now
I purposely bought an XR with turbo charging in mind. My car is being used to develop turbo kits for sale and I will most likely be a dealer at some time as well. If all goes well, there will be some very fast XR(T)'s on the road in the next few months
I bought rear stock disk brake calipers yesterday, I already had all the other parts for rear disk conversion except the rotors, not sure which ones I will use. Please note, this is a very expensive thing to do when getting new Toyota parts. Now I would try to find used Celica GTS rear brakes as almost all the parts are the same, found out a little late on that one, $1,200 late and that was with 20% off or more on all the parts!
DAAAAAMN!!! I am thinknig of doing a rear disk brake configuration.... so I cna't acutally look into getting the Celica parks and they will fit for the conversion???
Unfortunately for me I ordered all the parts, 20% off, before realizing the celica GTS parts are the same. The parking brake cable could be different and maybe another part or two. Overall I spent alot of money, got the calipers today, total is around $1,100 (US)without rotors! I am glad I have new parts for my new car, no worries about something going wrong after I spend a small fortune in time and money to build it into my show car (rather fast show car at that, hehe!)
My plans now are to use something like the AEM big rotor kit for the front and their disks for the rear and paint the calipers black.
Isn't the XR a better choice for turbocharging than the XRS? I read an article that said that the XRS was risky to turbo because the compression ratio was so high. You would not be able to run as much boost on an XRS. Since the torque is only 5 better on the XRS, it will not be able to produce as much torque as the XR due to it's inability to handle high boost.
So what is the verdict? Is the potential of the XR greater than the XRS?
I agree that the XRS is better out of the box, but if you are going for forced induction which is better?
This is a good thing for people to know before they wait a long time for the XRS. They could spend the money they are saving on a turbo system for the XR and have a better car. Hehehe, BOV's rock!
I agree completely, why I bought an XR the 14th of Feb and was not even concerned with waiting for the XRS. Still looking for the right "T" to add to the XR badge on the back and go XRS hunting when the turbo is complete. We did the baseline Dyno run yesterday, totally stock, 122.6 HP at the wheels, not much yet but will be fairly soon. This is a development project for kits and will be done one step at a time, building for the most power at each stage with reliability always a key factor and running very clean as well. Not an easy task and these engines are built very light which unfortunately limits the maximum output we can achieve. It will still be a nice performace car once done though, no broblem!!!
Hey Raam,
Do you know anything about NA stuff for those that want to start light? I have a 4WD XR and I think i have about 7 less hp out of the box than the 2wd. I would like to see a good filtercharger with polished tubing and a cat back exhaust. I also would like to see a fuel pressure guage and riser. A stoichiometric meter would also be good for our cars. By the way, these things will also be good for the turbo buff. Any add ons that you know of that aren't hack jobs are helpful for those of us that are new to the matrix, but not new to tuning.
For me it's all about squeezing all the power you can out of the engine safely before you force feed the hog!
What are some good pre-turbo add ons?
By the way, for those of you who think the 4WD model is just a toy for techno geeks to play with think again. My 4WD Matrix kicked the butt of all stock 4WD trucks I have had the pleasure to go up against...on street tires! The 4WD Matrix was rated the #1 4WD car on the market today. If you live in the country, the 4WD XR is the best small 4WD car you can have. And it does sweet donuts!
so.....
i'm just wondering... is there any follow up on the XR-T??
or did i missed a reply??
so.. do we conclude that XR has more potential than XRS?
well.. saw this magazine about XRS with turbo.. got approx. 230 hp (can't remember exactly) ON THE DYNO...
which is ALOT...
i kinda doubt if the XR-T can give u that much power...
The project finally got underway yesterday, took forever the get the right turbo put together and delivered, huge demand on them lately and this one was matched for the engine specs so was not just off the shelf. It will take some time to complete as each phase, three of them, will be fully tested and dyno tuned to get the maximum safe output. The kit/kits as there are three levels you can go to, will be built up with smog certification planned into the design so there may be some limits on how far we can go and the whole structure of the engine is not really beafy so there are definately physical limits as well.
We could end up with less HP, likely will, but at alot more usefull RPM range than the XRS with torque fairly equal to theres I would imagine, maybe even better, at least I hope so!
One thing to keep in mind, the XRS one would never even come close to being legal, they did not even have a stock ECU, this would prevent it from becoming a saleable kit. If they mode it to be one there will be some major revisions required and most likely lose a bit of the power they now have.
I just hope someday we get a good piggy back or stand along ECU that will smog, with all the different uses of these engines I would think some company would finally see a big enough market to go after it.
I will keep you guys posted, as much as I am alowed to as this is being developed to market, on the results as we progress. This process is in very good hands, some of the very best so expect results, reliable and realistic ones.
