I think Toyota is pretty stoopid here...they could have yanked their Celica GT-4 drivetrain components for the Matrix.

But I think the real reason behind it was that Toyota knew that their drivetrain COULD take the 40 extra horsepower, but they were concerned that the SUSTAINED USE of that 40 extra horsepower by hotshoe teenaged drivers would kill the tranny quickly and give Toyota a bad name...so they decided against it.

There are lots of people I know who want the 4WD, but do not want that crappy 135hp engine.

yeah that sucks...

they thought about the celi gt4 componants but it was to heavy for the torque the engin as...130p/f of torque is not getting you anywhere whit that kind of weight!

Another downfall of the 4wd model is that it only comes with an auto! which I regret not getting so much and gave it up for the 4wd! and yes the car has no power and the HP i only 123 on the 4wd and 130 on the fwd....

the worst we call it awd or 4wd its not...

its a fwd with a visco-coupler that transfers the energie to the rear wheels when the front ones slip!

toyota says that its a 4wd......
but its not intirely true..

In fact your matrix is most of the time fwd
an when one of the front wheel slips, the v-flex system(4wd)take over.

In reality its a visco coupler that transfer the energy to the rear wheels.

All of this is done by your abs
sensors and computer.

hope it helps

yeha I know it's a part time 4WD.... when I was ushing it on a twisty turn... I went in and there was a patch of sand in the middle and the front slipped... then all of a sudden I feel the rear tires pushing me out of that turn... it was pretty cool.... all I have to do now is just give it more GAS...

Sorry guys, I guess I stand corrected.. I meant to say 6spd. I'm just used to typing 5spd. since 6spd. has become the new manual transmission for most new model cars..
