How to shut off maintenance required light?

I am going to be changing my girlfriends oil on her 2004 Matrix because she hit the 5000 mile mark and want to know if there is anything special I need to do to shut off the maintance light that went on at 5000 miles. Will the light shut off when I change the oil or do I have to reset it somehow. Any help would be appreciated and thanks!

disconnect the negative cable from the battery for a few minutes. Mine doesn't do that as a result of an oil change. It just started doing it after i installed a short ram intake. But it may have been from dirt and such.

What does the light look like ?????
If it looks like a engine ... its not a service light its the Engine MIL ( malfunction indicator lamp ) ....... take to the dealer.......

XRS22 if the lght is comming on all the time after the intake was installed.....You did it wrong!!!!!

unless the USA spec cars have a service light for oil changes ....For Canadian cars on any Toyota it doesnt have one ( the exception beeing the Previa Van ( not the SC version )it did have a light if you were very late on the oil change )

I cleared out the intake and cleaned it. I think i may have put it on too soon after I used the K&N cleaning kit. I cleaned the throttle body and the intake tube last week i'll give it one more week and see. There was some oil build up, i may have to cut the rubber seal that connects the throttle body to the intake tube.

or you can to it the RIGHT way. with the car key on ACC, set your odometer on mileage(not trip a or b) then turn ket off. then hold they button that switchs from odo and trip, then turn the key back to acc. while you are holding it down you will notice the maintenance light blink and go out. and then you are done. now that wasn't hard now was it.

what you are saying is that there is a service light on the US spec cars???

Hav a '05 Matrix with 17K miles. (Just bought it used, so I don't know how long ago it
was reset, but dealer said it means oil change is due...). Yes, and dealer ALSO wanted to rotate tires, change tranx. fluid, check brakes, all for 'only' $250.- ! (Thats what the lights really for!)

Light comes on first at start up, and lingers, and goes out-- AT FIRST; after a few days it comes on and stays on.

BTW: Thank you for info. on clearing it; I plan to change my own oil. (5-30 SemiSyn Castrol).

Followed the above example on my 2005 Highlander, after some adjustments to the wiring on an aftermarket HID headlamp conversion. Thank you for posting it.

Noticed that you had to put the key to "ON" not to "ACC" to do it

Revised procedure (for Highlander)

Turn ignition key to 'ON' and press the odometer button until the display reads actual mileage... not Trip A or B.

Turn ignition key to OFF.

Hold in the same button you used in step 1.

While holding the button in, turn ignition key to 'ON'.

The 'Maint Reqd' light should blink and go out.

I'm also trying to shut it off and can't, don't know why the odo button and turning on isn't working.

Will try disconecting the negative to see how it goes.
