Yeah, I can do it for you.

Basically, you either need to stay with a REALLY low boost kit, or have the engine rebuilt with low compression pistons and prefferably forged rods. Then you can turbo like any other engine... careful tuning and so on.

It depends on how much power you want and how long you want to wait to reach full boost.

I'd be happy to help you select a turbo.

Don't bother waiting for a TRD supercharger, I don't think it's going to happen.

I think the best way to turbo the XRS is to do what Saab is doing. And that is....Have the turbo start boosting at a very low rpm, Let's say 1500 RPM with full boost(not over 7, or 10 with intercooler) at around 2500 RPM. Here is the hard part though....You should have the wastegate fully open well before secondary lift is activated(6200-6400). If the turbo is still pushing boost at that RPM there will probably be serious problems. Basically, set it up to use the turbo to push up the power on the low RPM and let the engineering of Toyota and the 2ZZ engine take care of the higher RPM. These cars are rockets as they are but with a VERY VERY limited RPM range. If we could get some more power on the lower RPM ranges, these things will be amazing. The problem with the wastegate opening way before the "lift" is that the car might fall flat, meaning it will pull hard through the boosted RPM and then stop pulling and gradually go up till the "lift" RPM. It will be tough to do without lowering the compression and new pistons and such. I would love to see a RELIABLE turboed XRS. I really don't think TRD will make a subercharger for this model. Another option is to find out how the Lotus Elise engine has been reconfigured to produce 20 more HP and a much wider powerband. It is much more usable that the Matrix.

Sorry, just saw this. The best way to get ahold of me is email.

Basically, you have two options for turbocharging a 2ZZGE. (Actually, it's the same as any other engine).

1. Turbo the stock engine. That means that you'll be pushing boost into an engine thats already running 11.5:1 compression ratio. You would be running 5 PSI MAX with intercooling and careful tuning, not to mention 93 octane. Do you even have 93 in CA?

2. Rebuild the engine for low compression. This basically just means that the pistons would be swapped for custom low compression (8.5:1) forged units, and the rods would be forged as well. Then you could boost up around 15 psi reliably, again with careful tuning.

Either way, you should use a good piggyback computer to control fuel and timing. Explaining how to do the tuning is beyond the scope of this discussion. Also, you really MUST have at least a LSD and a big brake upgrade.

slipknot, I understand what you're saying, but I would never actually do that. That's exactly how the 1.8 T by VW is built as well. Here's why I wouldn't do it:

The real reason to turbocharge an engine is to have lots of power. The only time you're going to need and want that power is in the higher RPM range, I'm talking from 4500 up. So anything below that is really not useful at all except for daily driving. So what's the point?

It would be far better to size the turbo so that full boost happens around 3000-3500 rpm and can boost efficiently through the rest of the powerband, then you'll get the full enjoyment out of the car.

At least, that's what I would do. BTW I will help you select a turbo once we figure out what your power needs are. Hit me up at drtweak@phoenixtuning.com

Try talking to someone from stafford fabrications, staffordfabrication@yahoo.com or phone (661)816-5444. They should be able to help you out with the 2zz engine.

I hear the matrix computer or ECU is next to impossible to crack, and a piggyback system will just comfuse the OEM ECU. Anyone else hear of these probs?
