9005 foglight conversion

I did the infamous 9005 (to fit 9006) conversion in my foglights today. This is a cheap DIY method to get more light output out of the foglights. I used the resource from the "Ultimate Camry FAQ" under 'MORE LIGHT': http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t6831.html

The stock foglights use 9006 bulbs. 9006 bulbs have a cap at the tip of the bulb to shield some of the light which is why it's also used in our low beams. 9005 bulbs are clear at the tip of the bulb and aren't capped or painted at the tip yielding more light output (hence the use of this bulb in the high beams).

I just used Crappy Tire Motomaster 9005 bulbs to experiment with in case I hacked the bulb improperly the first time out. I'm pretty pleased w/ the light output so I'm gonna run these bulbs for a bit before changing them out to a whiter bulb. It'll be put to the test the next time I head out to my sis-in-law's who lives out in the boonies where I have to drive about 50km w/o street lamps.

There's two things you need to do to the 9005 bulb in order to fit the 9006 harness.
1. Remove the two 'guides' or 'rails' inside the socket. You'll need to remove the 'rails' as far back to the socket as possible to get the 9006 harness to fit properly.

2. Remove/trim a few millimetres off the center 'guide'/'frame' thingy

I hacked away at it initially w/ nail nippers but it didn't do a clean job. I ended up using a soldering iron to melt the plastic off cleanly. I suppose a Dremel can do the job too but could be messy. Lastly, make sure to keep your paws off the bulbs!

Pardon my burnt out headlight. Pics don't do the light output justice. Just drive around at night to notice the real diff.

Nah. But what I should've done is plug in only one of the bulbs so that you could see the difference. Trust me though, there's a difference.

The tube of the TRD CAI is right behind that headlight so I have to partially disassemble it to get to the bulb harness. I'm just too lazy to change it. That and I'm waiting for it to get warmer outside.

It's a cheap mod. Don't wait, you might wait 4-5 years. You can get cheap high output white bulbs for about $15/pair.
