xrs, sunroof and 17" alloy

Hello,

I talked to a salesman earlier today, he said the factory won't make an XRS that has a sunroof with 17" alloys because it will compromise the "structural integrity" of the car. Now, does that mean the warranty on the car will be voided if someone puts 17s on his/her car? probably should have asked that question to the salesman, but anybody out there knows anything about this?

enjoy the weekend ladies and gents!

One thing and one thing only, a total crock of sheat! It is just a marketing thing, does not make any sense to me but that is it. I have had several tuners look over my car, with the interior out and they are amazed at how well built it is, in fact made comments about it being a WRC car just waiting to be built, like it was designed for it

I agree with RAAMAUDIO... they're a load of crap!

yea

I have heard all of the following:

1. It makes the car unstable.
2. The sunroof will crack if you corner hard due to body roll.
3. The added weight of the 17" wheels + sunroof put the matrix into another class (SUV), so they had to in order to stay in the desired class.
4. They are limited on the supply of 17" wheels....so they chose to not offer both knowing they would have production issues.

I would tend to MAYBE believe #2 & 3....HOWEVER. The local dealership where I got my XR has sold two XRS w/ sunroof and the 18" TRD wheels + springs. Also, my salesman said that I could "void my warranty" by putting 17's on my car, however the mechanic said thats a load of crap and they have NO warnings from Toyota or TRD about larger wheels.

I would get the wheels. If you crack the sunroof...then put the 16's back on when you get warranty work done. I would also put some sort of springs on it just in case its a stability issue, should resolve that. A good strut brace would cut down on body roll as well.....

All theoretical knowledge...I am not saying I proved any of this, just observations (lies! lies I tell you!!).

Cheers.

I'm a salesman at a toyota dealership the real reason is because adding
a sunroof and having 17's will put the price tag of the matrix xrs out of
where toyota wants to keep it .I added it up myself it would cost u a little over 23,000 (plus and minus a little)and thats not even with a navigation system with that your talking about 24,500.Thats more than most celica gts!!!They will have a hard time selling them then.I got that info from my disrict rep. from toyota cause i wanted a matrix xsr w/ 17's but i couldnt so i asked why and thats what he told me.Needless to say i ended up getting one with the roof and 16's and a dvd nav system the sticker price was 23,755 its not like it mattered i paid invoice. :P

That is a rediculous answer iceman. There is absolutely no way Toyota would not put an option on a car because it would cost too much money. Announcing that you work for Toyota makes it even worse because now you are speaking for Toyota. Last I checked you said you were a salesman, not a representative.
There are many reasons to consider why Toyota wouldn't have the option of 17" wheels and sunroof, one being the EPA standards. It is fairly common for automotive companies to submit the weight of each vehicle to the EPA only to find later that adding options would put the vehicle over it's weight limit specified by the EPA. This happened to certain models of the Tundra when the trailer hitch was added. For that reason, certain models weren't able to have that option unless it was installed as an aftermarket part.
It is definately not structural integrety, I can tell you that much. If it is really an option you want , hold off from buying the Matrix until the 2004s come out. The 17" wheels and sunroof WILL be an option.
I do not speak for Toyota on this subject, but neither does iceman. I wouldn't mention your district manager either because I'm sure they don't want their words put on a forum like this.
FYI :P I paid below invoice :P figure that one out.

I bought an XR with sunroof and 17" wheels. It was "at sea" when I ordered it, and had 16" wheels. The dealer had them put 17" wheels on "at port". They never said a word about it. I didn't even know it was an issue unitl I read about it at matrixowners.com.
