Torn between Matrix XR and XRS

Hi,

As my topic suggests, i cant decide between the XR and XRS. I dont know how to drive manual, and am most likely going to get an automatic transmission. I have a few questions that, if answered, could help me decide.

1) Torque is an issue for me. i live on very hilly roads, and was wondering if the torque on both models is sufficient enough for the 3 mile stretch of hill that i have to ride to get home.

2) The matrix will only be for everyday driving. That said, i wouldn't say no to future performance mods that would increase torque and/or useable horsepower. I heard that the XRS isn't as good for such modifications (something about compression?)

3) for purely aesthetic reason, has anyone gotten the 18" TRD wheel set? how does it look? does it affect the handling of the car?

Thanks a lot.

Either one you get make sure you get very light wheels if you go with 18's. My 19's really took a bit out of the off the line acceleration I had with the stock tires. If getting an auto I would probably get the XR myself.

I'd get the automatic XR as well.

If your looking for torque then the XR is the one you want. I researched both engines and they made the 1ZZ-FE with torque in mind. The intake manifold was designed for low to mid torque with out hurting high RPM power. That's on of the reason's it kinda looks like a header. Toyota also made the the stroke of the 1ZZ longer than that of the 2ZZ-GE so it would improve low end torque.

The 2ZZ in the XRS doesn't have the low end torque that the XR does. It does have the high RPM horsepower but you asked about torque. So the XR would be a good choice for your situation.

Also depending on what your wanting to do with your vehicle the 1ZZ might be a better choice to mod just because of the lower compression ratio. 10:1 verses 11.5:1 of the 2ZZ. Levelten can upgrade your torque converter and you'll gain around a full second in the 1/4 mile. Yes they claim this! I have also contacted JET and they can reprogram the ECM. They claim around 10 to 14HP and have said the 1ZZ should respond better to ECM tuning.

I could go one and on with performance upgraded but you didn't ask that. Good luck with what ever you decide to buy.

well

If you cannot drive stick (or don't like to), if you can FIND an auto XRS, get it. The price difference in the US is not that large. If you are in Canada, then the XRS is pretty pricy.

I have an auto XR and love it. Its not the worlds fastest car, but it is not a huge slouch, the auto is one of the better ones I have driven.

You might consider the 4WD auto for the hills, its only 7hp shy of the 2WD XR, a simple Injen intake could fix that. Plus you get better overall suspension with that model.
