engine reving by itself

my '05 matrix engine is reving by itself when parked or stationary; is this normal? if i'm waiting for the lights to change or just parked i'm noticing the tachometer going up slightly and there is this reving sound that goes on for like a few seconds then stops then starts again 20-30 seconds later and so on. the car is brand new; i've just done the first oil change, 7500km...
tks.

i don't think so. the recording has a certain amplitude and it's very short and it repeats at a quicker pace. no, the reving it is not quite like the recording, it's more random and longer in duration. thanks anyway.

I have an 05 XR 4WD doing same thing. Approx 5000 miles on it. I've considered unhooking battery and any related fuses and letting computer reset to see if it solves the problem. Not a major deal, but a little annoying as it wants to surge while I'm sitting at a red light. Maybe a trip to the dealer is in order.

I wonder if that 'revving' sound you hear is not the engine but the cooling fan going on and off.

that's what i was thinking also. Just start it up, pop the hood and get out and look around for anything.

yes! it looks to me like this is a combination of both, engine & fan. the thing is i have to bring it to the dealership tomorrow 'cause the windshield liquid tank leaks and i was wondering if i should address this issue too. the only thing is, when they do this and it's not a defect, they charge you an arm and a leg...
thanks

You shouldn't be charged for troubleshooting when you're under warranty.

My car physically surges forward slightly periodically when stopped at a red light or sitting in traffic and I notice the tach also goes up a couple hundred then dies back. Again, not a big deal but I'd love to hear what the dealer says if you have them investigate this. Thanks!

My '05 does the same thing. It's very intermittent, which is driving me nuts. If you hear anything from the dealer, please let me/us know.
