I have a question about mileage. I have an 05 Matrix XRS. Every weekend tend to go south from montreal into the states, about 220 miles, so 440 round trip. Going down to the states i've not done the mileage estimate, i keep forgetting and all. but, coming back, i've done this a bunch of times and i did 218.3 miles on 25.749 litres (american car, canadian gas). That comes to an astounding 38 miles per gallon, or 7.34 litres per 100km . Now, at first i was like, noway. Thats way too good! but, i had gotten the same mileage driving from Connecticut to Montreal, 542km on around 40 litres of fuel. Which is also 38 mpg. What i did notice, is that i use more of the gas tank going to the states than coming back, very odd. I think its either the wind or maybe that the majority of the trip is downhill (but that must be a negligeable difference).
ANYWHO, what are your mileages? I'm trying to fing the most efficient speed to drive. I usually drive 120kph/70-75mph depending on my rush. Is there a speed that the matrix is best at? if it were 65 mph, i'd go 65 mph. I was thinking of taking a different speed every time i do the trip, but it sucks using the cruise control.
PS: I have no modifications on the car. I use 93 grade fuel (is it really neccassary??). all the drivin is 6th gear, but i rec to 8000 rpm on the onramps and stuff.
Wow. You get amazing gas mileage. If you usually do 120km, then stick w/ it. That's probably the fastest you could go w/o decreasing your mileage and staying somewhat 'within' speed limits.
On pure hwy driving for me, I won't even hit 30mpg. (I've got an 03 XRS 6 speed.)
The lowest fuel grade you could use in the XRS is 91.
I have 2005 XR Automatic. I just broken 1000 miles, and on the 3 gas fill so far I've avg. 28, 29, and 32. Probably 30-40% city driving, with the rest highway. Most trips involve more highway here in the Midwest (i.e., one small then 7-10 miles highway, then another small town, and then highway miles, and so on....).
I also have an '05 XR Automatic, and on this most recent fill-up of gas, where it was almost entirely either highway or low-traffic city driving, I got 36 MPG. I think my hubby averaged between 65-70 MPH when driving on the highway. He filled up with 93 Octane in it just because the dealership gave us a voucher for a free fill-up, and it didn't matter which octane we used.
In normal driving conditions, which are rush-hour highway and some city driving for me, I usually average 30-33 MPG with standard 87 octane gas. The sticker said 28 city, 34 highway, but I have yet to get anything under 30. And this is sitting still on the interstate some mornings.
My base Vibe is now at 56,000km and my average fuel consumption since day 1 is 39mpg (CAN).... which is great..... that includes city and highway driving....
And on the highway my wife and I have a lead foot.... 120 is a cruising speed....
i keep forgetting and all. but, coming back, i've done this a bunch of times and i did 218.3 miles on 25.749 litres (american car, canadian gas). That comes to an astounding 38 miles per gallon, or 7.34 litres per 100km .
umm ... not sure about your math (I am assuming you are using the US gallon vs the UK gallon) ...
25.749L is 6.80216615 gallons (US) according to google
thus 218.3 miles on 25.749 is 32.0927 mpg
which is 7.32921981 L/100km
I've been keeping track of my fuel since I've gotten my car (2004 XRS). The best I've ever seen is 6.949L/100km or 33.8 mpg. The worst I've ever seen is 10.223L/100km (during break-in period) or 23 mpg. My average is 8.6L/100km or 27.6 mpg. Using my best as 100% highway driving, and my worst as 100% city driving ... My average comes out to about 49% city driving, and 51% highway driving
I have a spreadsheet (Excel) that does all the calculations for me (as long as I put in the amount of each fill up (L), and a odometer reading (KM) ... it'll spit up everything nicely, but it can be tweaked for (M) and (gallons)). I can post it if it is wanted.
I should check on my math. i used a random online calc, may have been from a uk site. i'd like to see that spread sheet too! however, i have a US car, so could you leave the formulas unlocked to change the conversion? thanks
Here is a link to an excel spread sheet. It is using the megaupload server, so I don't know how long the link will be active.
I've removed most of my own data (except my first three fuel entries for calculation purposes)from the spread sheet. I normally just fill it in as I go.
My first tank of gas, I got exactly 30MPG doing a good mix of Boston city/highway driving. Does the cruise control help save gas? I've got the 2005 XR and I'd like to average about 33 MPG. I'm using the basic gas, would using a higher grade gas be better?
