Anyone know why there is a rattling sound when I am idle??

I have an automatic XRS. Everytime I'm at a stop and the shifter is in (D) drive, there is a loud rattling sound that I think is coming from the engine. When I put it in (N) neutral, it goes away and the idle is smooth again. When I put it back in (D) there it is again. But when I take my foot of the brake and the car begins to roll, it goes away. Anyone have any idea what this rattling sound could be? I have 7000 miles on my XRS and I'm worried that this sound might get worse and later cause a problem. Anyone? Please help. Thanks!

I was going to but I thought someone might know on here. I really don't want to pay the $90 for the diagnostic check.

eh?

The car is in warranty, there should be no charge for them to look at it. Esp if you can reproduce it flawlessly.

Hey there!!!I bounced this problem off some of the guys in the Corolla section and they think that the rattling is coming from a heat shield which is near the catalytic converter or it might be the cat itself breaking down.In any event, have your dealer take a look.Hope this helps!!!

MOTOR MOUNTS : possible cause : Have checked for cracks ,

looseness , defective mount parts . I am pointing this out due to an XRS ownwer in other FORUM ( matrixowners.com , matrixvibe.net ) that had a defective mount replaced . A poor mount possibly / can cause vibration . Second of all , we have a problem w/ our base MATRIX w/ 4 speed auto . Ours clanks when put into reverse . The click is when put into reverse or drive . It also clicks when accelerating from a stop . Apparently TOYOTA / PONTIAC are aware of these quirks and are telling their SERVICE DEPARTMENTS that this is normal . Baloney !!! Hope this helps .

Good Luck
