Gas Overflow When Filling Tank?

Has anyone else had gas overflow when filling the tank? I've got a 2005 Matrix Base and am on my 4th tank of gas. Two of my fill-ups have resulted in the gas overflowing from the filler neck. Both of these times have been at different gas stations, so its not the pump. It's either the person operating the pump (me) or the car's fault. Other than this problem, I'm really enjoying the car, ...but I'm not looking forward to the next fill-up. Any ideas?

All pumps will click off when the tank is almost full (I'm sure you know that, and asuming you leave it locked and are not pressing it with your hand). If this doesn't happen, I would just fill the tank to its capacity as follows:

Gas Tank Capacity in Gallons: Front-Wheel Drive - 13.2, Rear-Wheel Drive - 11.9

Just look at the pump display until you reach capacity and stop. Drive and check that the fuel gauge indicates full to confirm.

I've had it overflow about a handful of times in the 3 yrs of having this car. It could possibly just happen on station by station basis.

My car's gas tank does the opposite. If I push the gas pump all the way in, it will click off too early. Maybe you aren't pushing the pump in far enough, or something? I have to stick it all the way in then sorta adjust it outwards for it to not immidiatly click off. I have an '05 XR.

I haven't had a problem with it myself. Then again, I've only had my car for 3 months. I had it happen to me before on a previous car. I'd wonder if you just didn't have bad luck with the pumps.

Hahahahaha this reminds me of this time when my dad and I were driving back from the beach in a van and I was in the back with a hurt leg. He put the gas in and started to fill up then walked off to go to the bathroom. Well the pump didn't click off, and gas started to spew EVERYWHERE and I couldn't do anything about it because I had a hurt leg and was immobile. All these people started running around frantically and yelling because no one wanted to get covered in gas to turn it off. They were like "OMG IT'S GONNA CATCH ON FIRE AND WE'RE GONNA BLOW UP OMG OMG OMG" Finally some guy came and turned the pump off, and my dad came back to a large puddle of gas and an even larger gas bill. Moral of the story: don't start filling up your car and then leave the scene altogether.

Mmmm now I will stare at the pump from now on... I always leave my Mk1 fillling up and cuts safely when full. Never had any problems.

I've looked down the filler neck and noticed a small tube (maybe 1/4" in diameter) sticking into the neck, about 1-1/2" down. I'm guessing that the nozzle might have got hung up on this so there was not a good seal around the nozzle and the neck, causing the pump not to shut off. I guess I'll find out next fill-up. Should be in about 4 days!

Bazirker:
Glad no one was smoking around the pumps!
