Wow, I just found out that there is now a forum for this subject, I think that may be a sign that we are talking it to death. Although I too have become somewhat obsessed with the subject. Anyone else out there bummed because now you think more about gas than about your car itself. There was a day when we all got 8 miles to the gallon and burned out at every light and we were all happy...
I'm also sad that my children will never get to experience the wonder that is the gas guzzler big V8...
We figured fuel prices conversations go up as prices go up...lol.
They days of not worrying about 8miles a gallon are no more, but it doesn't mean we can't have our toys. Just means we have to be just a bit more conservative.
I don't think V8 guzzlers will go away, they'll just be kept in the garage more.

i agree with fumes.. people will still drive the V8s, and etc. but it would be more like a weekend toy or a cruise along the strip with the spouse/gf/fiance/family/etc.. i notice all my buddys with V8s and gas guzzling cars are getting street bike.. saving their pride and joy for the weekend or just a night out with the fellahs to burn some rubber aor let them V8s roar..

I remember back when I could pay $25 to fill up, now I pay $45. Considering that I'm only 21, this is a frighteningly scary realization of how much gas has gone up for me, I even remember when gas was $1.30, damn it makes me feel old.

.97, 1998, and when did a V8 suddenly become a gas guzzler
I remember .25 a gallon (1970’s). At .50 I could drop 2 bucks in the tank and cruise the strip for hours in a 73 Pontiac V8. Jack rabbit starts, burn offs, doing 40 in first gear just to hear the motor sing. Tricked out 66 GMC truck, V6 (pistons as big as large coffee cans) and 2 speed power glide. It would go forever on 4 gallons (at least all weekend).
Now those 4 gallons barely get me to work and back in a little 4 banger. ONCE
If you adjust for inflation the price (yearly average) has always been around 2.25 and 2.75 with the exception a few times (>3.00). The teens (1913-1919) pump price of .25, the thirties (1930-1939) pump price of .25, the early 80’s (1980-1983) pump price 1.35, and now (2006-????) pump price, per existing data 3/08, 3.08 (yearly average). Now it has been lower twice. In the early 70’s (1970-1972) gas wars brought the yearly average pump price down to .70 (1.80 adjusted). And in the 90’s (1990-1999) average pump price was below 2 and dropped to 1.40 in 1999 (around a buck in actual pump price).
So what does all this mean? Well it hurts now but there is no reason to scream the sky is falling. It may get worse, it may not. Manage yourself through the cycle. Either the price will come down or everything else will catch up. And 20-30 years from now you will tell your grand kids I remember when gas was $4 a gallon……..
I highly doubt many people will still be driving gas burning cars by the time I have grandchildren...and if they are it will probably be more than $8/gallon...Crap, man it's already over $8 a gallon in some parts of the world...
And I think the problem is not that the price of gas has not gone up equally with the inflation of everything else, because (at least up until the past few months) I think it pretty much has. The problem for me is that my salary has not gone up proportionately with the price of gas (nor has anyone elses, lol.) But I'll keep dreaming...
