I might add, I get 18 when I'm babying it. Shift around 2200 rpm and accelerate slowly and coast as much as I can, driving like I'm a "pissed off teenager" I get about 16.
Sorry man, is it broken in yet? I've got about 15K on mine.
Your in Canada, so talking Imp gallons or US gallons? If 14 & 28 Imp mpg, then your talking roughly under 11.5 mpg for you and 23.5 mpg for
your bro in US mpg.
23.5 is possible with some people's V6's on hwy at lower speeds and conservative driving. Auto or stick, TRD vs Non-TRD all have same gears.
Non-TRD may have slight mpg advantage with its narrower tread & H/T tires vs either TRD's wider 16 or 17 wheels and tires, and less weight w/ less options.
Be sure your maintaning your truck right and work on your driving habits, thats what will save you gas. But if your in all stop and go, your never gonna see your bro's mpg numbers...

Did you guys read my post carefully? I said I'm getting 14 mpg (with TRD package). My brother has the same 2005 Tacoma SR5 4x4 WITH NO TRD package and we calculated acurately 28 mpg highway. I've spoken to Toyota directly and they say it has to do with the gearing in the TRD package. Are they blowing smoke up my ass? Please I need the help; I'm on the verge of getting rid of the truck.
Unless your brother lives somewhere over 8K - 10K feet in elevation, his numbers are wrong. At that elevation (I'm a non-TRD), I've gotten 23 mpg. That's just about the best anyone can get even with street tires for this 4x4.
As far as your low mileage, what percentage of ethanol is in your fuel and what kind/size tires are you running and at what pressure? Those factors and your driving habits are your worse enemies to MPG.

Another option for you would be to pick up a scanguage(if you haven't already done so) as this will assist you with determining how to balance driving with the best possible MPG. That being said I average between 18-19 driving like an old lady in hilly Richmond Va. Driving to the NC outerbanks I averaged 21-22 MPG because it was flat and hardly any stopping.
I've got "08 4x4 SR5 manual 4cyclinder with 7000 miles. In Easter KY mountains I consistently get 22 mpg.
I have an 05' 4x4 manual 4-cyl with 48,000 miles. Just recently installed an HHO hydrogen unit to improve mileage. The unit works great, just have to tweak the AFR (air-fuel-ratio)sensors with a POT to keep from dumping more gas into the mix.
Do you know of anyone else with an HHO unit on their Tacoma? If so, would love to share info.
It converts your gas-burning engine into a hybrid. By that I mean, the HHO unit, which is a container set up like an electrolyzer, to take the hydrogen out of water and into your intake system where it gets burned along with the air/gas mixture.
Do yourself a favor and go to water4gas.com, there you will reap all the knowledge you need to convert your vehicle over to hydrogen. It's a whole new world out there, and people are getting involved learning how to convert their cars/trucks/boats...etc....over to hydrogen.
Personally, I bought a Hydro Super 2 unit, which uses distilled water and 5% distilled vinegar. Go to the Hydro Solutions website and check out the video. The unit is commerically built and puts out like crazy once you have the water/vinegar ratio down pat. By the way, you'll also need to check what type of O2 sensors or AFR(air-fuel ratio) sensors you have located before and after the catalytic converter.
Hope this helps a little bit. Good Luck! Oh....one more thing. There's a website: fuel-saver forums.org. Go there, register, then you can get all the information you'll probably need to answer any and all questions. It all depends what you're driving.
I just bought a 05 Tacoma 2WD TRD Sport with 265-70r17 tires completly stock with 79,000 miles for my son. We took it on a trip this weekend and I only got 16.7 MPG all highway miles. Driving in town I got 13.6 MPG. I thought the truck would get better mileage than this.
