I have an 05 Tacoma SR5 TRD 4x4 and have been getting terrible gas mileage (14mpg). I have heard it's because of the gearing in the gearbox.... is this true?? and if so how do I improve my gas mileage? As well, I have heard that the same truck without the TRD option gets close to 28mpg....has anyone else experienced or heard of this difference. thx for the help in advance.

Did you guys read my post carefully? I said I'm getting 14 mpg (with TRD package). My brother has the same 2005 Tacoma SR5 4x4 WITH NO TRD package and we calculated acurately 28 mpg highway. I've spoken to Toyota directly and they say it has to do with the gearing in the TRD package. Are they blowing smoke up my ass? Please I need the help; I'm on the verge of getting rid of the truck.
Ask your brother if we can trade trucks. The max I have EVER got with my TRD on highway was 23. And that was on a long highway trip with the wind blowing in favor of myself.
this sounds like a driving habit issue. maybe try anticipating green lights so you dont come to a full stop, quit trying to drag race up on ramps to freeway speeds, and mind the speed limits a bit more while using cruise control. report back once you have given those a try.
if not then continue to blame toyota for the bad MPGs. do realize the window sticker gives you an estimate of the average driver not driving like a pissed of teenager.

The manual will get about 1 MPG less it seems. I have the auto and my MPG is between 17-20, but its brand new still so I expect it to imporve somewhat as I do mostly highway driving.
What sort of driving do you do? If its mostly city, that can partly explain your poor fuel economy as stop and go driving is hard on gas, if you drive the truck hard, it will be worse as well. I find it amazing that your brother got 28 mpg- is his a V6? If so I seriously doubt that he's actually getting 28 MPG unless all his driving is coasting down long hills, in neuteral.

i question that statement !
i have a 4banger 5 lug auto. it has taller gears than a 4x4 and i get 28 freeway and i am far from being considered a leadfoot !!!!!
my truck sits lower to the ground than a 4x4 and has 15 inch narrower tires so less rolling mass and a bit more aerodynamic ( as a truck can be) and a few hundred pounds lighter.
if i keep it running no higher 2k rpm i can get 29 mpg, but that is a bit scary for merging on a freeway !

If you trade the TRD in on something else, think about the difference on what you paid, vs what you owe, ect and calc that into what your going to be paying w/ the new vehicle.
You think that the MPG/ Gal $ is bad w/ the Tacoma - you calc that and your going to

If you really start calculating then you will drive whatever you have for a looong time, and completely avoid finance charges.

i find 28 mpg's in a 4x4 tacoma VERY hard to believe. you are on the lower end of the scale mileage-wise at 14 but, i would have to make an educated guess that your poor mileage is a result of your driving habits, and his fantastic mileage is a result of miscalculated numbers.
when i drive good, only floor it about 3 times a tank, i get 19, with lift and 265/75 load C
when i drive bad i get at least 16 no matter how many time i floor it or do dougnuts
