California no-go

I read that piece and it would never work on Southern California freeways. I ought to know as I've tried it many times. The drivers here are too in-your-face, too competitive, too petty, and simply too aggressive for that tactic to ever be successful. Interesting idea, though. Just an opinion....

It works in theory, but I don't think it works in reality. When you slow down, you are just creating another jam behind you. And most traffic jams happen at places where multiple lanes merge into one. There is nothing you can do when there are more cars coming in than the road and digest.

Yet somehow I've done it on 10E somewhere between 5 and Ontario. I just went 20-25 the whole way...That was before I knew I could take 210 and bypass most of that. The only reason I even did it was because I was lazy though.

That's a really good concept, but if you're going to drive at the overall average speed of the traffic during stop and go, you have to have the nerve to deal with the fact that the guy(s) behind you are going to be frustrated, because they don't understand that what you are doing is beneficial. Even if you were only benefiting yourself by doing this (which you really benefit everyone else in the long run), you certainly aren't impeding anyone, so people shouldn't get frustrated. People just don't really think things through in this way.

This could help in the city too, making it so you don't have to come to a complete stop at every light. Like I said, be prepared for the people behind you to pass you and then slam on their brakes.

sounds nice in theory, when u put it into practice everything goes to hell. a tactic like that would never work in new york, the moment u leave space between the car in front of u someone will gladly cut u off to fill in that gap...and believe me people (unfortunately me included lol) have mastered the art of cutting u off with 2 inches of space between the cars, u can try to go slower but u'll still end up flooring the brakes everytime someone cuts u off, ur better off just keeping up with everybody else

So what is the appeal of mastering the art of cutting people of with 2 inches of space between cars? If indeed the person that you cut off had to floor the brakes so did you, what did you gain?

In theory you are getting somewhere faster, but you aren't.

Yep, but it doesn't stop the drivers around here from doing it

nope normally i dont have to floor the brakes cause the car in front is moving normally it's just the guy i cut off decided to go 15mph in the left lane and leave enough room for a conga line...of course having said that im not saying cutting off people is good either lol it's a real bad habit im trying to peel before i wreck my car...but believe me after getting stuck in traffic for 2 hours and realizing the whole reason for it was cause people decided to go against the flow and slow down for no reason during rush hour, any sane person would get agitated

i gotta learn better self control

Out here all you gain is that fleeting moment of "Fuck You!" at having performed the maneuver and gotten in that person's face. It's a way of life on California freeways. Of a similar vein, another of my favorites that's very common in SoCal is to approach a car in the lane at high-speed and perform what I call smart-ass lane changes, where you cut out of the lane at the last moment, missing the car's bumper by six inches or less, then doing the same thing at the front. Nothin' but idiots and jerks!

Well, like the Beach Boys said, "I've been all around this great big world...."

and I've only seen three places worse than So Cal: New York City/Newark, Cairo, Egypt, and Athens, Greece.

Those are decent practices, but you can't live by those. The trick is knowing the situation, and knowing which technique to use.

The "wave" only works sometimes. If someone is leaving a "huge gap" in the kind of traffic, then they are part of the problem, not the solution. The goal in heavy traffic is to move all of the cars as quickly as possible.....one driver wasting space will only worsen the problem by lessening the vehicles on the main roadway at any one time. It is selfish, those people who do the extremes of 8-10 car length gaps.

When I drive (typically), I accelerate the same pace as the person in front of me. Say when we are stopped, I leave a 1/2 car length gap......well I damn near maintain that same gap until the person has reached their cruising speed....at which point I start backing off to a more reasonable distance. I can get away with this though because I am one of the most alert drivers I know. I never make eye-contact with my passengers......my eyes are ALWAYS on the road, and I never talk on my cell phone while driving.
