I just had a 400 mile tank in my 2008 V6 4x4 Double cab. I was getting really sick of 230 mile tanks of gas and decided to do something about it. I did a few little things, but mainly I just went the speed limit. This was about 70% highway 30% City. I would love to see what I could do at 55 MPH on Cruise for the entire tank. I am completely stoked about this and just wanted to share it with all of you. All I did other then drive like grandpa, is remove my tailgate and drive with the windows down and the sliding one open instead of the A/C. It is actually more fun to look in your rearview and see how pissed off the guy behind you gets as he does a hard cut into the next lane to pass you and stares at you like you have three heads as he drives by, then it is to drive like an asshole. You should try it.
400 Miles / 17.9 Gallons when I filled up = 22.34 MPG
congrats.... that is pretty much what I'm getting with my v6, tailgate on and up, A/C on full blast and windows up.
most will say tailgate should be up for better mileage and if you're going greater than 45 mph, you're creating more drag by having a window open and using more fuel doing that than just running the air conditioning.

haha... i do that too. I write off my miles ~11,000/year @ 50.5 cents per mile to equal $5,555 written off of my gross income. lets say for instance, that my tax bracket is 30%..... writing off my miles puts $1666 back in my pocket each year which essentially pays 86% of my gasoline expenses.
FYI mileage reimbursement is .585 cents/mile now. And eyedoc is right, running the AC at higher speeds is much more efficient, plus I start feeling hot when it gets to the low 70s I think I should move to Alaska...

Yeah, but then you would be complaining about the cold.

I get 19 mpg 100% city hammering it passing silly people wasting there life trying to save 30 cents a day(pulling out in front of me making me slam on my brakes then proceeding to accelerate to 50mph over the course of 3 minutes). So anyway thats how I feel.... Congrats, buy a civic then you'll be really stoked!

Windows down are not an option here. 70 degrees I would love to have that here right now 110 degrees as I write this. Truck siting in the garage the temp says 115 in the garage. (oh well its a dry heat dont like humidity)
But back on topic, I am too trying to get the most out of my tank. I got a scangauge and am trying to modify my driving habits. Last tank 18.8 .

You sure that's not Imperial mpg? That would be about 16 US MPG which would make more sense for that style of driving.

I keep all my windows open including the back one. I dont think it causes that much drag. The air goes right through. I love driving with the windows down.
And to the guy who said to "buy a civic". I already have one, but I enjoy driving my tacoma so much more. Infact, I dont think I have ever enjoyed a vehicle so much.

I'm a big boy, I got plenty of insulation Besides, aside from some extreme situation, I can always toss on a heavier jacket, but theres only so much I can take off before someone calls the cops .
That said, I drive with the A/C on constantly, I like the truck to be very cold, cruising speed is usually 75-80 on the highway and I'm still enjoying the sound the TRD exhaust makes at WOT a little too much, and I still get 18 mpg. Best so far was a trip back from Logan airport in Boston (~70mi) doing about the same speeds as above, but steady with cruise control on, and my tank was nearly 21 mpg! Haven't been able to beat that.

It was actually proven that leaving your tailgate on increases fuel efficiency because it creates an air pocket in the bed that directs airflow over the bed. Also you get better mileage above 45 mph with the windows closed and the air conditioning running. This is because the wind hits the pilars and everything inside the truck and causes turbulence and it doesn't matter if it just flows right through to the rear window, turbulence causes drag. I get 23 mpg easily at 65 mph with my windows closed and my tailgate on and up. 22 mpg is not hypermileing ether, you want hypermileing? Go talk to the guys who have been getting 120+ mpg in the Toyota Prius by using techniques and tricks that can be dangerous and often times illegal. Those are the true hypermilers when you get double the rated MPG
