32 Mpg!

I have a '05 quad cab short bed 4x4. I use to get around 22mpg highway and 18-20 in the city, but last tank I tried hypermiling, and I got 32 mpg! If you guys haven't tried this it really works. You can Google technique specifics, but it involves momentum maintenance instead of acceleration/deceleration. To get the best gains you have to turn the engine off and coast as much as possible and swallow doing only 60 on the highway. The only downside is taking longer to drive, but for 50% better fuel economy I'll gladly sacrifice 5min in a half hour commute. If anyone else is sick of $4 per gal gas or wants to reduce thier carbon footprint I'd suggest trying it. Just be aware that when you turn the engine off the power steering goes away, and you only get 3 pumps of the brake pedal before the power brake assist goes away as well, so plan ahead.

Yea, I didn't do the push out of the parking space stuff, but I tried to turn the engine off and barely coast into every red light, only go 60 on the highways, never press the gas down more to maintain speed up hills, etc.

I'm all for extending your mpg, but this is downright foolish and dangerous.

All the fuel you saved is lost if you crash or worse yet hurt someone else. You can't always 'plan' when a car or kid jumps out in front of you.

If your gonna coast, do it the motor on, idling, saving gas but still having steering and braking.

AMEN!!!!

if you want 30+ mpg, drive a $12k Yaris..... that's just plain dangerous turning your engine off. I'm all about going easier on the pedal and coasting to stoplights (timing them right) and even only making right turns so you don't have to fully stop.... but sometimes, things get carried away.

pretty extreme/stupid.
isn't their a law or something that says you can't shut your vehicle off while in motion?
i'm going to laugh when you plow into someone because you forgot to "plan ahead"
plus-what's the fun in driving if you have to be that anal about mileage? get a differnet vehicle if you can't pay to play.

If you're going to go to that extreme to save a few bucks, then you shouldn't be driving a Tacoma. Trade it in for a Hyundai. What you described is not only stupid, but dangerous to everyone on the road around you. There's a reason why they're doing news specials on this kind of stuff, because it's causing accidents!

Its a good thing you hypermilers save money on gas, because your gonna need it for hospital bills if one of you idiots hit me.

You still have power brakes with the engine off, and the power steering doesn't do much above 30mph. It's hard to think of a situation where someone would jump out in front of you where you wouldn't "plow" over someone with the motor on anyway. Hypermiling requires you 1. maintain a larger gap up to the next car, and 2. pay much closer attention to your surroundings, traffic lights, and the flow of traffic. Both of those lead to safer driving, not less.

Buy a golf cart.....those things cost like 3 cents per mile to run. I find it funny you don't push yourself out of parking spots (too extreme) but rather shut the truck off in traffic.

Im pretty sure you use all that gas you just saved when you restart the motor. Ive always heard that its better to let your car idle for 5 or less minutes than to cut it off and restart. so wouldnt neutral make more sense?

My 06 Tacoma gets 22 to 23 mpg around town. Personally, I'm thrilled with that. Every truck I've ever owned before got 15 to 18 mpg. This is the first mid size truck I've owned, and I love just about everything about this Tacoma.

You would have to save a lot of gas to justify the extra wear on the starter from starting the engine at every stoplight.

I will go 60 on the highway and coast (with the engine on) as much as I can, but beyond that no way.

Yea, that's the big misconception that many still hold. Modern engines take as little as 7 seconds worth of fuel to restart, so turning the engine off with just idling can reap big dividends.

I have a 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty, so I'm not worried about the extra wear and tear with only 40k miles on my truck.
