It must have a payback to be worth doing or else noone would do it. Everyone's payback is different and different people value things differently.

taking my side mirrors off, running without A/C, putting flat wheel covers over my rims, removing my antennae and my windshield wipers, etc.....seem silly to me and are a safety hazard. why endander myself to save $.10 worth of gasoline?
I can see how removing the side mirrors and windshield wipers could be a safety issue, but how is going w/o A/C, removing your antenna, and using flat wheel covers going to cause safety hazards?

Anyway, it's not like flat wheel covers would cost you more than ~$15, and they should be good for a ~2%-5% increase at highway speeds. In your truck it would probably save you about $20-$80 per year depending on how much you drive.

I wouldn't bother with the antenna, A/C, and so on, but aeromods like flat wheel covers, underbody covers, and a sloping bed cover can save a lot of cash with a pickup. That said, it's your call if you want to send more money to OPEC. It's a free country. Hell, you can send Saudi Arabia a big fat $1000 thank you every christmas if you wanna.

A pickup truck that gets parked and used only for heavy hauling while a more economical vehicle serves daily driver duties consumes VERY little fuel.

Yeah, the "buy a beater compact car and use that instead" mod is generally the most cost effective, but sometimes people don't want to go that route.
