47.5 Mpg

In my pursuit of 50 MPG i got pretty close. I went 384 miles on 8.101 gallons of fuel. I could done better if I was able to control myself a little bit more and didnt go 90mph at points. I would guess my average speed was somewhere around 72.

My car is a 2002 5spd corolla S, lowered on 16" and a magnaflow muffler.

What kind of air filter system do you have on your car? I assume you have a free flow filter like a K&N. If not, it would get you another 4% to 6% improvement in mileage to achieve that 50 MPG.

i have a regular airfilter, those k&n are a waste of money. As long as the filter is clean you get the same economy.

I disagree about the air flow. I also use K&N filters because I run my vehicles in the desert all the time, and since I can clean my K&Ns I save a boatload of money compared to constantly buying paper filters. Anyway, to each his own. Hope you make that 50 MPG....

Isn't using the K&N in the desert the worst environment to use a free flow filter?

You are correct, you are just putting sand in your motor.

And the free flowing intake only helps at max rpm, which isn't where anyone that is driving for mpg is near anyway.

Nope, it works fine. As long as you oil the filter properly the dirt capture is excellent. I have had no problems, and none of my four-wheeling buddies have had problems. Perhaps part of the reason is that the desert areas I go to are more gritty, sandy dirt rather than talcum powder type dust. Anyway, for me they work fine.
