Electric field research produces results

Here's a gas saving technology that's got some research behind it, and not based on some late night infomercial. This is excerpted from the December, 2008, issue of Scientific American:.

More Fluid Mileage

Electric fields can boost a car's gas mileage by up to 20 percent, thanks to a well-known effect in which electric fields reduce the viscosity of a liquid. Reduced fuel viscosity means that much smaller droplets can be injected into the engine, leading to more efficient combustion. Investigators at Temple University thinned fuel by attaching an electrically charged tube to a diesel engine's fuel line near the fuel injector. In road tests, the attachment, which consumed less than 0.1 watt, increased highway fuel economy from 32 to 38 miles per gallon. The researchers, who describe the boost in the November 19th edition of Energy & Fuels, expect the device will find use in all kinds of internal-combustion engines.

can you provide a link to your source for that?

let's just say i'm VERY skeptical about this. there has been hundreds of claims of magnets increasing fuel mileage in the past and NONE of them have worked or come up with any evidence to show that they even might work.

Scientific American, December, 2008, page 42, More Fluid Mileage. This is the hard copy magazine and not an online source, but I suppose you can visit their web site and see what link/links they might have related to this article. I haven't had the opportunity to read from the research periodical they cite in the article, Energy & Fuels, but next time I'm out at the nearby university I intend to look it up.

Like I said, it's not snake oil being sold on a late night infomercial. There's qualitative research behind this effort. BTW, thanks for the link, which saved me a trip to the university.
