Rebuilding my 5sfe for better mpg...

I've been forced to rebuild my 98 camry due to my silly engine trying to compress a cylinder full of water ( bent rod bad times!) Well my question is since my engine to completely apart and being cleaned up what more things can i do to it to get more extra mpg, i was getting about 28 wherever i go before. thanks for the input!

Increase compression is probably about it. A little head work may help you increase compression more, but if you don't know what you're doing you can make things worse rather than better. You can try singh grooves if your head design allows for it which it probably doesn't being 4 valves per cylinder.

The issue is doing a precise rework costs a lot of money that may only pay off in small gains.

There might be something in using better quality piston rings, making sure the bearing tolerances are OK.

Polish the crank journals, balance crank if using oversize pistons.

Perhaps minor head work, polish exhaust ports, equalizing combustion chambers, 3 angle valve job.

Using synthetic oils in the engine and diff may help. Also trans if stick, not up on it use in automatics.

You can coat your piston tops with thermal coating, coat skirts with dry film lubricant.Go to www.mpgresearch.com and read up on "power lynz" and "power valvez"? Gapless rings or low tension rings, but i don't know pros /cons on these. You can ask www.totalseal.com Get an adjustable cam gear and advance it some.

You can get a lightweight crankshaft, rods and pistons, but your looking at 1000s of dollars there.
