Back in the winter I was getting 33 mpg with 34 on occasion. Now with warmer weather and 35-36 lbs of tire pressure I'm up into the 34-35 mpg range. latest mpg was 35.98 mpg!!! That's hybrid territory for sure. I'm happy

If your tires are rated for 44 git'em up there. I run 44 minimum and inflate to 50.
I'm at 38K with the cheap stock tires and I'm expecting 45-50 before retiring them, I see no center wear that most that have never tried it warn about.
If you are not at cleanmpg.com already it's a great site to learn more about increasing your mpg.

Thanks all! Just filled up and she's dropped a little...36.4 mpg. I usually round off to .25 or so after the first gas pump click, but I've been told to make sure its getting to the top, so I stuffed it, AND still got over 36 mpg. I know if I took readings the same way as I used to it would be getting 37+ mpg.

If you use a tread depth gauge, you will find the center of the tire much more worn than the edges. Also, using inflation pressures that high will cause the tire to be very, very hard and not able to absorb/flex when it hits potholes etc., which can cause the tire to fail. A maximum inflation pressure of 44 psi cold is meant for high speed use to increase load carrying capacity, but it isn't the recommended air pressure.

In other words, the tire can also wear out faster and negate any money saved on fuel.

Correct, as well as too high inflation pressures of 44 psi can cause the rims to dent very easily, (costly to replace), and suspension components like MacPherson struts to wear out prematurely, not to mention drivetrain components like CV joints/axle shafts, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, etc.
The correct recommended tire pressures will be listed in the owners manual or on the tire placard on the car which is a small white sticker showing the recommended tire inflation pressures. The tire placard can be usually found on the end of the drivers door where it latches to the car when you shut it, (or one of the other doors), inside the trunklid, the glove box or even on the backside of the fuel door.
I hope this has been of assistance. Take care, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Well I have been running max pressure and getting improved mpg with all my vehicles over the last 25+ years and have not seen the increased wear or uneven wear, and have never had any mechanical issues that you say will result.
Underinflated tires will wear out fast I agree, but I haven't seen it with overinflating.

You've been running 44 psi air pressure in the tires and haven't noticed premature wear in the center of the tire?
I've not run pressure that high but I've heard the same from a lot of Prius owners that they haven't had uneven wear either.
