Hey, it still fits the criteria: I can haul crud in it similar to a pickup, and I get 20/28 for mileage like a medium size sedan. Laugh if you will....

just got back from another trip and this was my milage. 90% highway @ 120km/hr +/- ; 5% city @ 60km/hr +/-
6.7L/100kms (35.11 MPG) .
first time ever after arriving back yesterday and doing city driving today i've hit 500 kms and still have 1/4 tank left. my tank is 50L, and usually when the fuel light comes on there's about 10L left. not sure but when i left the city i put in petro-canada fuel in it, on the way back i filled up with shell. so i guess shell has a better quality fuel ? cause i drove the same road going and coming back.
In Canada, Shell has the best quality fuel available. Sunoco (Suncor/Ultramar/Pioneer) is #2 and Imperial Oil (Esso, Petro Can, Beaver, Can Tire, etc) is #3 but still above the independent stations. I owned the last two Pioneer stations in Ontario before they went franchise. Sold them in 2005.
Keep in mind that the EPA for 2008 changed highway mileage ratings from 55mph with A/C off, to 60mph and A/C on. I find at higher speeds with any vehicle, say over 110km/h, that cruise control works against fuel economy and you can better manage the hills, you'll have better mileage. Cruise control always keeps some power on boil, and thus uses more fuel in some cases.
As for using more fuel in the city than on the highway with a small engined vehicle, you have to consider RPM, and throttle position. It takes more throttle to maintain 120km/h than it does to get up to say 55km/h in town and cost a block before adding more throttle to maintain speed. It all comes down to physics and numbers.

Try driving at 100km/h or 90km/h. I bet you can crack 600kms.
We got about 6.7L/100km in our 4-spd Camry XLE (1,500kg) and the same 2AZ-FE engine but it was mountain driving to Kelowna. A bit of pulse & coasting in the city and I managed to net 8ishL/100km over 50km during one day. (Normally, the trip computer sits at 10.5L/100km). So yeah, it's partly the fuel, partly the speed and partly how you drive =).
I'm always amazed at the fuel efficiency of a Corolla.

Yeah a lot of factors are involved, that's for sure! At least with Toyota, they try their best to keep weight down, which allows them to utilize smaller engines with lower HP ratings, and thus better mileage than the competition.
A while ago, the 2.4L 158hp I4 Camry was pitted with other 4cyl rivals, such as Malibu, Fusion, Sonata & Passat. The Toyota matched the 20hp higher Hyundai for fuel economy leader at 23.8mpg. Besting the others by 1-4mpg, which is significant. I'm sure you can read it all on their website, but the Camry was the lightest one of the bunch, and it wasn't the smallest car, but it was the least powerful.
