How do you tell your MPG?

Are you guys just calculating it every time you fill up or does anyone make a nice display that you mount and it tells you your estitmated MPG like scan gauge. Only thing is I don't want to pay $100+ for a scan gauge.

Do what I do. Next time you fill up, clear out your trip a or b. I use a for fuel and b for oil. When you go refuel, divide the number of miles by the number of gallons, and that will be a pretty good indication of how much your making per tank. Good way to tell if your car is drinking up more fuel, or if you have low air pressure in your tires. It makes a noticeable difference.

You have three main options.

Scangauge2 at about 250.00
KiwiMPG at about 90.00 (it's big brother is 299-features comprabale to the SG)
Ecometer by Autometer about 70 bucks.

The Kiwimpg and the ecometer are more basic and tell you mpgs. The SG2 and the KiwiMPG's big brother, the Kiwi have more functions.

Many people here on TN Own and use the SG2, I've read around the nets people seem to like the ecometer as well. I personally have a SG2.

Here is also another thread: Anyone ever tried the PLX Kiwi? Scangauge?

This is what I do. I pull back on the vapor recovery nozzle, which allows me to fill each time to the lip of the fill spout. Not flawless, but IMO pretty damn accurate.

Is it like a diesel dispenser? It stops when the fuel touches the tube? Although with diesel you can see the fuel inside the tank and point and shoot the stuff unlike gasoline.

Dunno. I've never dispensed diesel. The vapor recovery collar work on a vapor pressure basis, not fuel touching the probe. For both my Highlander and Avalon the pump shuts off early no matter how low the pump rate is set. Then, by pulling back on the collar, I'm able to get 1.3-1.4 gallons more in the tank, which is like you described where I can watch the gasoline pour down the fill spout. I hate those frickin' collars...they're so worthless....

^^ Are you talking about the charcoal canister? If so it is potentially harmful to force more fuel into the tank as it can flow into the charcoal canister and is quite costly to replace.

I don't think we're talking about the same thing.

Yes, into the OBD2 ports. Almost plug and play with minor programing.

Gotcha. If you open the cap to a tank of diesel, you can see the fuel inside. This is especially easy if the fuel tank is the two steps up to the cab rather than under the vehicle with a hose.

Pull back on the trigger and fuel just sprays out like a garden hose. It does not matter if it's pointed into a tank or not - there's no vapor recovery. There's just a rubber or plastic flange, I'm guessing, to prevent fuel from splashing out. The dispenser clicks off when fuel touches the end of the nozzle.
