Gen5 Fuel Economy on Camry 2002 4Cyl. 2.4L

What are mechanical problems that lead to bad mileage? I have around 17 MPG while my friends' car get around 21 MPG or more than that.

Underinflated tires, worn out oxygen sensors, burnt out spark plugs, mis-alignment of the vehicle, brake drag, oil leaks, dirty air and fuel filter, black, dirty engine oil, faulty air intake, just to name a few. I know that sounds like alot but it's a good place to start

Have a mechanic or friend check your OBDII computer to see if there are any trouble codes that may be hindering fuel economy. You may need a complete tuneup as well, which makes the car feel brand new.

Hope this helps!

That's very low, especially for a 4 cylinder Camry.

Are you doing lots of city driving? Sitting in rush hour, idling at stop lights, etc...? If so, that may be a contributing factor. It also depends on your driving habits. If you're racing around like a fool then you will return poor fuel economy results versus driving like a granny (slow acceleration from a stop, driving 55-60 mph, coasting, etc.)

I have a 2001, 4 cylinder and I average 33-36 m.p.g...you should be averaging at least 24-25 m.p.g., but something sounds a miss.
