My brother had an 87 ae86 and I've had 3 240s - an 90 hatch, a 95 SE and currently another 91 hatch, all SRd. Stay with the 240, a good condition one can be found a lot easier than a hachi and there are a ton more parts available. Also, as you mentioned, hachis are a ton of fun but way way underpowered.

So 240 + welded diff and go kill cones at a local event.
