Question My new Celica~~??sterio not working need amp

I just bought a 1990 Celica, with only 1 owner fully loaded, apparently the woman whom I bought it from said that the amp under the passanger seat got wet and it shorted out the whole sterio system. She stated that it hasn't worked in years. I've checked all the fuses and the radio, and they are fine, my question is do I need to have an amp in order to use the radio & does it have to be the same amp from the manufacturer? I called Toyota and the said it will cost me $600.00 for that amp. Could I just use any amp? If not, does any one have one that they would like to sell for a 1990 Celica GT S? ~~~ PLeASe hELp Me!!~~~
I love the car, but I'm dying to ride out with the radio!!~~~
