3rd Generation 89 Supra- P/S problem

I'm looking for advice on my newly acquired 89 Supra, white edition, targa, 20K on a replaced 7m-gte and... auto tranny.( The bright side is I don't spill my coffee). The power steering is down. The previous owner repaced the pump but it had no effect.I read a post that there is a fuse that might have some control on it?I'm thinking a defective pump.Any ideas Jeeves? Going to try gauging the pump output pressure before tearing into the steering gear housing. No leaks. Thx!

There's not a fuse, it's all mechanically driven. With later years it's speed sensitive as to how much it'll assist, but I don't think that hit til 90-91.

Howere, there is a powers steering filter in the bottom of the resevoir. Often, you'll have to remove the whole resevoir assembly, and take a garden hose to the bottom nozzle. and blow it clean.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else other than defective equipement somewhere.

Thanks, I'll check for a blockage. I hope it isn't in the gearhousing/rack setup. It seems that would be indistructible except for seal leakage. I'll let you know what I find.

You were right Jeeves. Blockage in the screen.Looked tarlike .Maybe from the old burned up pump. Bad news is the new one is toast too. No flow to the input of a vane pump equals bad news.Anyone ever rebuild one?

I was reading a thread on another supra forum about the Cressida p/s pumps being the same as the turbo Supra (not the n/a verision). You may be able to find a used pump. There are probably more Cressida ones still available than turbo Supra ones.

Mine is was rebuilt. The local UAP/ NAPA store can have it done. I dropped mine off at 9, it was sent to a local shop, redone, painted and shipped back to me for under $100 by the time I left the office that same day.
