Supra reliability

Well, I currently drive a 2001 VW GTI 1.8T and am looking at switching over to a 93 or 94 supra. Ever try putting down 274 horsepower (at the wheels) in a front wheel drive car? If you have then you will understand my desire for rear wheel drive car.

Like I said, I'm not overly knowledgeable about this car and could use your help and guidence before making a purchase. What should I be looking for when I go see the first prospect (what are typical problem parts/areas that seem to be vulnerable to wear or failure?). Also, are the repair costs extremely high since the vehicle is no longer in production?

I'm sure this forum is filled with lots of knowledge and I hope I can learn from it! Thanks in advance

Supra and reliability is not a word some peeps will use in the same sentence, unless the NOT is also in there somewhere.

Myself, I find the supras very reliable. I believe it all to be a question of maintenance, and your driving skills. I have had many cars that peeps didn't want, but I manage to drive them very long without problems. Do i drive like gramma going to church on sundays, no. Do i drive like a wreckless maniac cutting peeps off and basically making myself public enemy number 1, well, no again.

i bought a 91 mk3 supra 2 years ago. it had 90kilos on it, i paid 12,000, and it e-tested and cert'd fine witout any work needed. I even e-tested again this year with another pass. All i have done in that 2 years is check the brake pads for wear, and make sure the sliders were sliding, replace 2 worn tires out front, and add an exhaust. nothing has broken unexpectadly. the supra now has 144,000kilos, so i do drive it a fair bit.

93-up supras are known for some common problems, like 2nd turbo whinig and dieing, noisy gear box and noisy rear end. You will find much more info on the forum wwwi-supra.com, which is mostly a 4th gen supra board. Also look at places like www.suprastore.com and www.mkiv.com.

You won't find many 4th gen supra owners in here, as this is a new board, only over a year old, and populated with mostly camry and corollas.(no offense guys)

if you wanna see a 4th gen supra, come by kelseys at hurontario and steeles tonight. there will be a red 94 for sale, along with possibly a couple of others, baring any snow or rain, ofcourse.
