Motor Oils

What motor oil are you guys using in your rides? This'll be my first FI car, and I know you need an oil that can withstand higher temps without breaking down because of the heat generated by the turbo/high RPMs. I was thinking Royal Purple, because that's supposed to be high qualit, but I have no first hand experience with it

Mobil1 10W30, for older cars I'm a big fan of their "synthetic blend" (even though it's like 92% Dino Oil). The gasket sweller works wonders for older cars that leak a bit.

Motul: Supposed to be a very good oil brand. I've never read the actual results of analysis though, and know nobody running it here. The high temp brake fluids are spectacular from what I have read!

I would steer clear of full synth on older cars. The additive packages tend to do a terrific job of breaking down every bit of sludge in a motor, as best evidenced by the fact that high mileage motor seals tend to leak like a seive after the switch, as sludge was all that made them seal. I've never tried the Mobil 1 semi myself, but I'd take Jeeves word for it.

Cool, thanks. Im thinking bout using Motul next as the mechanic i goto has a shitload of it now. And is 2 buildings down from my work. Thats all he's decided to use.

*** I know Amsoil is great, but alot of $$ and i dunno if its really worth it, changing it out every ~3K anyways.

Part of the reason full synthetic leaks in older cars is bacuse the molecules are smaller. The synth can squeeze through gaps that regular oil can't. If you do run a full synth. in an older motor, find one that has an additive that will swell oil seals.

I tend to run Castrol. I have gotten motors using it pretty hot with out problems. The real truth though, is that all oils no matter which brand all have to meet the same standards. The only difference between brands is the additives in the oil. The same is true of gas. It all comes from the same pipe. The rest is mainly marketing.

In my Mk3 I ran full Synth for a little while, unless I go through a full rebuild w/every gasket in the engine, I won't be doing that again. Little oil here, leak there, dribble there. It was just rather annoying and didn't seem to benefit me much. My mk3 will (crosses his fingers) be back on the road this weekend and I haven't decided which oil I'll run yet, but It'll probably be a form of Mobil1. It has been nothing but good to me.

As for the MHM (Mobil High Mileage) Synth Blend, it's only something like 10% Synth so don't go believing that it's God's gift to oils, but with the gasket swelling compounds and it being Mobil1, it cleaned up the oil leeak in my old RX, it helped the incredibly minor one in my camry, etc. If I can, I'll be running M1 in all my vehicles.

Used to be Mobil 1, now Amsoil 10W40. Amsoil "appears" to keep my oil pressure higher when running hot in the summer. I think that if you change the oil regularly, the brand really doesn't matter. Oil changed every 3000 km (that's all I drive each summer).

My S/C $runner has been on a steady diet of synthetic since I have owned it. Brand? - whatever is on sale. I don't switch brands each oil change but will buy the oil when it is on sale in sufficient quantities to do about 8 oil changes. Truck gets changed every 5000km.

I'll probably run 10W 40 because that seems to run better at "operating" and higher temps. Probably go down to 5/10W 30 in the winter time because it gets pretty cold here somtimes. I tried running Castrol GTX high mileage on my Subaru now, and it seemed like it broke down at higher temps, which I didn't have a problem with when I switched to the Mobil-1. I suppose Royal purple is out because i'm pretty sure it's 100% synthetic, so I'll more than likely go with the Mobile1

While we're on the subject of oils...what kind of oil will a '91 M/T take?

On my 94 Supra with 110,000 miles, I use Royal Purple 10w30 oil and the Toyota V8 oil filters. RP is %100 fully synthetic. Toyota filters are top notch and use synthetic fibers. I get RP for $5.05 a quart from Jeff Watson at Jaymark's Toyota. He also sells the stock filter for list price if you ask for the "Supra discount".

On my minivan and three other cars in the family that use non-synthetic oil, I use Walmart Super Tech oil and filter. Believe it or not, Super Tech oil is actually one of the highest quality out there. I believe it was top 3 or 5 in a test against leading brands. The content is comparable to Quaker State, and made by the company Champion. And their oil filter is comparable to Mobil 1 which uses synthetic fibers as well, not paper filter element like the other brands. You can't beat that for $2 a filter and $4 per gallon of fine dino oil.

Mobile Synthetic 0w-40. This is a slightly thicker oil than 10w-30 but has good heat properties for the turbo. I experience no leaks, just a few super tiny seepages near the front main seal and a few other places. But then again my car had 56,000 miles on it when I started running synthetic last year. Not bad for a 14 y/o (1992) car. It now has 67,000. The reason I go for synthetic is that I used to work in shops and I saw many Ford Taurus SHO's with high performance engines breaking bearings around the 120-130k mark. (they are Yamaha engines, not Ford clunk) My brother has one, drives the piss out of it, and always ran synthetic since 70k and its still going strong at 170k and counting.
