89' supra turbo, may be my next car.

So my wife and i were on our way to check out some houses for future purchase, over off of Granada. Usually there's some cars there w/ "for sale" signs on them and as we got closer i saw this.

paper

Since i probably won't get a '94-'98 supra i would rather have this, i don't know why but i do. The body seems to be straight and i can take care of all the body and paint work on it. I just need to get ahold of what ever parts for the engine and whatever else it needs to keep 'er runnin', and it's also a manual trans.. The upholstery needs to be taken out, leather, and switch w/ something else. I'll probably give them a call and see what's up. I have a '87 camry i'm trying to fix up, engine wise, and sell it for some money to maybe put down on this. Since i don't see turboin' my matrix any time, i'de rather have a car w/ a factory turbo and fuck uncle scam in the ass w/ his laws.

Id'e figure to bring here since you guys would know more about it than i would at this present time. I heard that the '87's had headgasket problems due to not tq. bolts to spec. qualifications. Any other info. would be helpful as i'll be googling some other info. on it as well, thanx Tn, your my hereo .

Anything with the 7M will have the head gasket problem, but if this 79k mile remanned engine has the PROPER torque specs with the PROPER workmanship needed, then you should be good to go.

Got a $$$ figure on asking price or what you want to offer? Looks straight.

I'd be asking questions like "why did it have to have a new enigne?"

The car itself looks good, but the 7m / Mk3 Supra has plenty of it's own issues. If it's a Targa, it'll probably leak, if it's turbo it'll probably have head gasket woes somewhere down the line, etc.

What's the asking price?

They're asking $3000 obo for it. I guess after 204k they needed to have it remanned but i haven't talked to them yet. I gotta get the number of the flyer and give 'em a call.

I'm steadily learning about the engine as i go, since i don't know jack about it thus far. I just know it's, or can be corrected if i get it wrong.

7MGTE
3.0L
2954cc EFI DOHC
24-valve 6-cyl turbo(C-26)

HP. 240@5600rpm
TQ. 253@3200rpm
I think that was the JDM spec. version but somebody can correct me on that.

CT26 is the turbo, 230 is the bhp number, it was revised to 232 later on, the specific year of which I'm not sure about, might have been '89. Close enough

Here's some more pics.

I took a ride in it yesterday and wow it was friggin' great. Everything in that car is immaculate, except the leather upholstery but that can be fixed. The engine and engine bay looked brand new, well the engine was a rebuilt but the lady put another 79k on it 'cause she didn't want to get rid of it. A new turbo was also put on and everthing works but it's sad to say how long this is gonna be around especially for that price, this sux. Well if it ends up being sold to somebody else there's always that one down the road from my parents but that one is gonna need some work to it inside and out. The guy also had all the documentation on the new engine and turbo and installation by Toyotech out of Merced Ca. and also has the numbers of the guys who installed the engine and turbo so they know the car pretty much. The owners of the car had it in storage for 5 yrs. so that's why it looks in really good condition except for obvious wear of the clear and that's about it. The engine was replace 'cause of the gasket and water leaked in and cracked the block and i mentioned the top and he said it never leaked.

Ok, the motor was replaced because it blew a head gasket, that's what's she's saying. They swapped in a JDM motor which have an unknown amount of miles on them, and those come with a turbo. I'd suspect that the HG on this car is factory as are the head bolts meaning that it's waiting to have another BHG right now.

Personally, I'd say $3,000 is a bit high for a stock '89 even in immaculate condition. Try and talk her down maybe? Based on the interior?

I'd be curious to see the documentation on this new motor. That must have been a hella costly job if it was actually a new Toyota longblock.

The car looks awesome, and to be in great condition. If I were you, I would inspect the motor in and out, look at the oil pressure also, find out what the regular pressure is and drive it. Also check out how smooth the tranny shifts, and see if the engine is making any knocking sounds of any sory. And since it's turboed, I would also get a compression check done.

It was around $3200 or around there for the motor and i think the labor was included, i think. The turbo, the same thing $1800 or so if it was including labor and such. The only thing that i heard was possible the sqeaking of the belts since they haven't been changed in the 5yrs. it was in storage + whatever time before that. With all the documents that they have i can easily track the engine installation which actually is only like 40mins. away from where i live anyway. All this will not matter anymore if someone else gets it but i know what to look for in the future when i do plan to get one and possibly have money saved to actually pick one up.

I'm gonna pick one up for $425 but the engine has a knock but i haven't heard it just only informed of it. I'll probably have to do some engine work but i'm just guessin' or swapping in another 7mgte. Could another engine be swapped in or is anything else just too much money and time to do? I don't i'll swap in anything else, just wanting to know.

If that knock is indicative of a spun rod bearing, yeah, you're either looking at a motor swap (plus a fresh head gasket), or a complete rebuild.
